The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is looking for a Virtualisation Engineer to join our active and engaged community of infrastructure professionals who work in a collaborative and supportive learning focused environment.  

Job description

As a Virtualisation Engineer at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) you will join a team who are responsible for the design, build, management and support of virtualisation infrastructure that underpin core infrastructure services which are aligned to ONS’s security principles. Our virtual infrastructure services span across both on-prem and cloud platforms, including a large Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) estate which is continuously evolving, and as a result we are looking for a Virtualisation Engineer to join our IT Operations team and be responsible for the support, guidance and improvement of our virtual estate.

Working within the virtualisation specialism of the Infrastructure Engineering community, you will work in a constantly evolving and dynamic environment, gaining exposure and enhancing your learning on both current and future virtualisation technologies.

Main responsibilities:

As a Virtualisation Engineer, you will:

  • Be responsible for managing day to day Virtualisation Environments.
  • Provide services, operational activity and support.
  • Monitor performance, contribute to continuous improvements and the decommissioning of Infrastructure services.
  • Provide mentorship and support to others in the team and across the wider technical community.
  • Build knowledge of other Virtualisation tools and systems such as VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery (VCDR).

Essential Criteria

As a Virtualisation Engineer we are looking for you to display the following experience and skills:

  • Experience in the implementation, management and support of enterprise VMware VCenter environments.
  • A working knowledge of cloud technologies e.g AWS/Google/GCP.
  • An analytical approach to problem solving, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within own team sharing knowledge to improve team capability.
  • Ability to build excellent networks among wider communities of practice, identifying and adopting best practice.
  • Able to co-ordinate build activities across systems and understands how to undertake and support integration testing activities.
  •  A real drive and passion for excellent user experience, employee enablement and continuous improvement.

Individuals appointed to the Office for National Statistics or UK Statistics Authority will be subject to National Security Vetting at “SC Cleared” level for this post. To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out applicants will normally need to have lived in the UK for the 3 consecutive years immediately prior to applying.

Stage 1 – Application & Sift

Assessment at application stage will be based on your job history, skills & experience.

The CV, job history and skills & experience should be tailored to demonstrate any skills, knowledge and experience that are relevant to the content of the role.

Your personal statement should be no longer than 1250 words. You should use this space to provide evidence for each essential criteria within the person specification. As the criteria are scored, we would recommend that you give clear examples for each including the impact of your actions.

This means that in the event that you are successful at interview, your starting salary will be calculated based on the scores achieved during the Technical section of the interview.
