The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is looking for an Infrastructure Engineer with Cloudera or Denodo experience to join our active community of technical professionals, working within our DAP (Data Access Platform) team. 

Job description

We are looking for an Infrastructure Engineer with Cloudera or Denodo experience to join our Data Access Platform (DAP) team working within our Technology Operations Division to support and maintain the software package life cycles of several Platforms and Software packages. The DAP team are accountable for the support and running of Cloudera, Denodo and other Software packages and technologies in line with ONS Security principles.

Responsibilities 

 As a Infrastructure Engineer and as part of the Technology Operations Division, you will be responsible for: 

  • Managing the full life-cycle of big data platforms including:
  • Managing incidents, requests, changes and problems.
  • Managing the configuration, availability, capacity, performance and cost and drive continuous improvement activities
  • Active participation in wider communities of practice, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences.
  • Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques and collaborating to improve the capability of the team and maximising their use.
  • Maintaining consistency between development and production environments.

Person specification

Essential Skills Criteria:

As a Infrastructure Engineer working in the DAP team, we are looking for you to have the following experience and skills: 

  • The ability to build, operate, support, performance monitor, continually improve, patch and decommission Platforms and services. 
  • Knowledge of big data platforms such as Cloudera (CDH or CDP), Hortonworks or Denodo.
  • Knowledge of database technologies and administration (ideally Postgres). 
  • Ability to manage and maintain system access and security. 
  • Familiar with some of the following technologies:

         – Coding/scripting in Python, Bash, Ansible or Terraform Linux

         – Server operating systems (Red Hat) 

         – Understanding of Cloud computing services (AWS/GCP) 

         – Storage technologies e.g. SAN and data volumes on VMware and hardware servers.

Stage 1 – Application & Sift 

Assessment at application stage will be based on your work history, skills, experience and personal statement. Your application should be tailored to demonstrate any skills, knowledge and experience that are relevant to the content of the role.

Your personal statement should be no longer than 1250 words. You should use this space to provide evidence for each essential and technical criteria within the person specification. As the criteria are scored, we would recommend that you give clear examples for each including the impact of your actions and set them out using the STAR acronym (Situation, Task, Action, Result).Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage.

In cases where there are a high number of applications the sift pass mark may be adjusted and candidates will be invited to interview in merit order, i.e. those scoring the highest.
