Job summary
Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding! The Nuclear Department within, Navy Command, has an important role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in materials, physics, chemistry and thermal hydraulics related to nuclear power applications.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program in Radiological Protection.

Person specification
Deliver lectures, tutorials and research project design up to RFQ Level 7 (Masters Level). Design, develop and assess courses in:
Radiation quantities and units
Radiological protection philosophy and its application through legislation
Dispersion of radioactive material in the environment, in both emergencies and routine release scenarios
Analytical interpretation of radiation sample results and the application of the reading to support operational health physics or emergency response
You will also:
Liaise with other Government departments and Civil Nuclear Industry to ensure a consistent approach to radiation protection and health physics advice
Peer review MOD Radiation Protection practice and policy
Liaise with nuclear regulators providing an internal assessment role and feedback on findings
Direct and influence radiation protection and health physics methodologies, decisions and proposal at a strategic level
Design, supervise and assess student projects
Undertake Course Manager duties
Maintain, develop and manage codes and software
Use and manage codes and software relating to radiological dispersion such as PC-CREAM, CONDOR
Attend working groups and represent the department at conference and working groups
Ensure continued professional development in area of specialist knowledge
Qualifications

The faculty strongly supports continuing professional development and therefore upon taking up the position, you will have the opportunity to undertake a range of courses, attend conferences and build collaborations with industry and academia. If you have not already acquired professional registration, then you will also be supported in working towards Chartered status with a relevant scientific or engineering professional body. It is anticipated that any research undertaken which is not security classified may be suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences.
The department is in HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire which is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy. HMS Sultan’s on-site facilities include secure parking, gymnasium, Wardroom membership and an onsite shop. Stokes Bay beach is close by and Gosport is a short ferry ride to Portsmouth, which offers excellent facilities such as access to travel networks, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.
This post on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
The post does NOT offer relocation expenses (move of home, excess fares or temporary transfer). Non-Standard move applicants will be eligible for the full package.
Pensions: Superannuation will be in accordance with the Alpha Pension Scheme.

Selection process details
Applicants invited to interview will need to demonstrate their technical expertise and must give a 10-minute presentation. The presentation should be technical and in an area of radiological protection.
As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came into effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points-based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical.
The role currently being advertised has not been assessed as business critical and is therefore NOT open to applications from those who will require sponsorship under the points-based system.
