We are seeking to appoint a suitably experienced teacher of Humanities with the ability to teach History at Key Stage 3 and 4, and experience of teaching History to (and including) A-level. King Richard School is in Dhekelia, in the Eastern Sovereign Base Area of Cyprus. Located overlooking the Mediterranean, the school serves predominantly children of MOD personnel and members of the local community. The school has around 150 pupils on roll and consistently achieves results at Key Stage 4 that put King Richard School in the top 3% of schools nationally. That is only part of the reason why the school has achieved an Outstanding grading at our last two OFSTED inspections. Community is a major part of our school’s ethos and this offers a depth to our context that is extremely rewarding. The DCS Vision is that we Educate the Child – Support the Family – Defend the Nation. Defence Children Services (DCS) is a Defence delivery organisation, subordinated under Army Regional Command. HQ DCS is UK based at Trenchard Lines, Upavon and has forward deployed staff all over the world. DCS is responsible for the education and care of children of accompanied Service and Defence entitled personnel in MOD schools and settings; provides advice and guidance in respect of education for service families in the United Kingdom and the wider world. 

The DCS Schools and Settings Service support the provision of high-quality care and education for Service children and entitled personnel in DCS schools and Settings across the world. The Service is led by the Chief Education Officer of DCS Schools and Settings. The 14 schools and 7 settings are situated in locations to support the effective deployment of accompanied Service and MOD personnel. Our schools and settings overseas mirror the English education system including inspections, assessments and examinations, and Queen Victoria School mirrors the Scottish system. This enables pupils to transition from our schools and early years settings to UK based schools and nurseries with the minimum amount of disruption. The forward deployed Headquarters’ teams provide support and assurance for our School and Settings based staff, providing expertise in all aspects of school improvement.

This role within King Richard School is an exciting opportunity to contribute to this wider vision of DCS. As a small school there may be a requirement to teach a outside specialism in Key Stage 3.

Job description

The Defence Children Services (DCS) provides appropriate professional direction, support and advice to ensure that service children, where ever they are living in the world, and young people are provided with every opportunity to achieve the best possible outcomes and fulfil their potential.

DCS is a highly complex organisation employing c.1000 personnel which includes Teachers, MOD Broader Banded Civil Servants, Soulbury Grades, Locally Employed Civilians and Contractors in multiple worldwide locations. We are seeking to appoint a suitably experienced teacher of Modern Foreign Language.

To contribute to the teaching of a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum across the full range of ability and help them to develop independent learning.

To model positive behaviour management strategies in an environment of mutual respect which allows students to feel safe and secure and promotes self-esteem.

To assess and record student progress giving positive and effective feedback that improves the learning of students in line with school policies and to take part fully in the School’s reporting framework.

Person specification

Experience/Competencies:

A minimum of three years successful experience teaching KS3-5.

Proven delivery of outstanding classroom practice.

Proven experience to successfully lead initiatives (relating to History and Pupil development or Sixth Form) demonstrating positive impact on progress and attainment. 

Setting high expectations and ensuing good progress and outcomes for all the pupils taught or mentored. 

Effective behaviour management that ensures a good and safe learning environment across the school.

To be flexible to teach outside subject specialism at KS3. 

To understand transition between KS5 and Higher educations. 

Licences

UK Driving License

Qualifications

UK QTS and successful completion of Induction programme at the time of application.

Evidence of qualification will be required at interview

All qualifications declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.

Selection process details
