Job summary
As the Defence School of Marine Engineering Functional Team Lead for the Marine Propulsion and Transmissions Team (M1), you will be responsible for the delivery of training up to Foundation Degree level, (BTEC Higher national equivalent) to military marine engineering trainees in all aspects of Marine Diesel Internal Combustion Engine, Gas Turbine and Transmissions, In conjunction with the provision of slinging training delivery.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week
Please note that DSMARE is due to transfer to Navy Command within the period Nov 2024 to Nov 2025. This post may therefore be in scope for potential outsource under Project Selborne during this period.
Job description
There are 3 key areas of delivery within the M1 Functional Group which provide essential propulsion, internal combustion engine, lifting equipment & slinging training to the Fleet. Watt Hangar has a staff of c30 instructors, made up of a mixture of, MoD civilians, RN personnel and contractors and which delivers internal combustion engine training. Raper building has c10 staff, again a mixture of MoD civilian, RN personnel and contractors delivering propulsion training, the Lifting Equipment team has 3 MoD civilians delivering training for all items associated with lifting equipment and slinging operations. Course are delivered to Phase 2 and Phase 3 trainees while the PJTs are taught to service personnel requiring specialised training. These courses are essential to sustaining Fleet Operational Capability as they underpin the Platforms ability to operate independently, at range, outside of base and contractor support for enduring periods and at a sustained operation tempo. This is a fundamental requirement to sustain core RN outputs.
Your role is to manage the team in their provision of this training in terms of both quantity and quality on a day to day basis. This includes direct line management responsibilities of the CS staff, together with general line management of the RN and Contractual staff, together with the RN Divisional and Babcock management teams.
You will also lead the team in the review, modernisation and implementation of training falling within your area, including the management of training change and training transformation being delivered at both a site and enterprise level.
The M1 DHoD in accordance with HEO management practice document must have completed a recognised apprenticeship or similar formal training with sufficient relevant experience to manage the delivery and the training design function within the group. There is some scope for Flexible hours and WFH.
Person specification
A successful candidate will be responsible for managing the team on a daily basis ensuring both training delivery and secondary tasking such as maintaining currency in subject matter, preparation of teaching material, upkeep of designated subject course documentation, development of new training delivery techniques such as virtual & online training, invigilation & marking examinations/ assessments, proposed course ware change requirements and new examination questions are being conducted by the team. You should also be seeking opportunities to mentor and develop new team members. Your line manager is DSMarE Commander ME and you form 1 of 7 key delivery areas across the school.
Qualifications:
- Candidates should have served a recognised marine engineering apprenticeship or a relevant alternative period of training and to have obtained a relevant national qualification in Engineering or a closely related subject. Additionally, candidates must have sufficient recent relevant practical experience to be credible within the role.
