The proliferation of digital devices in everyday life and the increased encryption associated with these devices provides reassurance to the general public that their data is secure. However, there are criminals that exploit encrypted communications to facilitate crimes that bring misery to thousands of people every day.

The Advanced Data Acquisition team develop solutions to recover data from digital devices that commercial forensic products cannot. With this in mind, we are seeking innovative, resourceful and determined individuals that are passionate about developing and writing software solutions.

Job description

As a Senior Digital Forensic Software Developer, you will focus on some of the Agencies toughest technology challenges. The main focus of your role will be to develop and transition bespoke software for use in accredited Digital Forensic Laboratories that enables the recovery of data from digital devices.

You will supervise a number of our forensic engineers who, like you, are energetic and enthusiastic professionals who enjoy problem solving and overcoming technical challenges.

You will be encouraged to and encourage others to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to accessing, analysing or deploying solutions that enable the recovery of data from security enabled digital devices.

Collaborative working is crucial to success in this specialist field, so you will be encouraged to share your solutions with the wider Digital Forensics community both Nationally and Internationally, therefore some overseas travel will be required.

Person specification

Research and development into emerging and novel techniques or tools for extracting data from mobile devices, whilst ensuring the integrity of the information obtained.  Your role will also include the maintenance  and enhancement of existing tools.

  • Analysis of new operating system features and applications in order to find ways to recover data or security credentials.  
  • Develop, deploy and protect sensitive techniques and tactics. You will advise upon the use and disclosure of sensitive tactics whilst enabling operational activity. Techniques used would need to be utilised in accordance with legislation, and NCA policy, in order to disrupt and degrade criminal capability. 
  • Maintain your knowledge of the latest techniques, to incorporate new techniques into the teams toolset.
  • Good interpersonal skills, required to foster and enhance relations with partners from across government, academia and industry leading to collaborative projects from a national and international perspective.
  • Manage and direct resources to ensure activity remains focussed and the recovery/analysis of items of forensic interest is completed within agreed timescales, financial constraints and quality standards against operational and organisational objectives.
  • Manage, coach and develop staff, including managing issues relating to the performance and conduct of officers in line with Agency values/policy.
