Job summary
The School delivers technical training in a mix of specialist classrooms and real working environments and utilises training aircraft and equipment to provide realistic training.
The school requires a general hand to be part of the Training Support Section.
The successful candidate will form part of a versatile and multi-skilled team, responsible for the maintenance and repair of aircraft / airfield Ground Support Equipment (GSE) such as aircraft jacks, hydraulic supply rigs, pressure charging trolleys, WAH equipment, as well as the maintenance, repair and modification of RNAESS Ground Training Aids (GTA) and Ground Training Aid Aircraft (GTAA). The post holder will be required to assist with the day to day operation and maintenance of the RNAESS workshops, hangars, tool and equipment issue centres, to ensure availability for engineering training.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Alternative working patterns are offered on a case by case basis and in accordance with business need.
Job description
Post Holder’s responsibilities include:
- Maintaining the required standard of cleanliness in the RNAESS Workshops/Hangars, ensuring all areas under their control are kept clean, tidy and safe.
- Assist with the handling of stores and bulk materials as required.
- Assist with the operation of the tool and equipment issue centre, as required during busy periods or staff absences.
- Assist with the operation of HMS Sultan’s Helicopter Landing Site and aircraft movements.
- Once trained, operate the metal heat treatment ovens as required to support training.
- Assist staff with the maintenance of hand tools, tool kits and associated documentation, as directed by the issue centre custodian.
- Assist with the security of the building, the drawing and returning of keys, opening and securing of the building as necessary, when required, during heightened security levels, to act as a door sentry.
- Take responsibility for own health & safety and of others, co-operate with your employer in the discharge of their duties under the health & safety at work act 1974.
Person specification
The post would ideally suit a candidate with a working knowledge and experience in any of the following areas:
- Mechanical / Aeronautical Systems; Industrial Equipment / Machinery; Fitter / Turner; Specialist Model Making; Metalworking / Carpentry.
- Candidates will be expected to actively assist, participate and contribute positive suggestions and support for continuous improvements within their own and when required other working environments.
- The post holder will be required to work flexibly and should be prepared to perform other tasks that are outside the normal duties of the post but are within their capabilities and grade.
- The post requires a level of team working skills as well as the ability to work unsupervised on various tasking to a high standard.
- The post-holder should be able to use basic Windows based IT applications. Once trained, the incumbent will be required to operate MoD IT systems and associated programs for work, HR recording and mandatory training.
- Applicants must be able to cope with manual work and be capable of undertaking Manual Handling activities after suitable training and working at height on ladders and servicing platforms at up to 3m height.
- A full driving licence would be desirable.
