Job description
This is a frontline specialist engineering post. You will need to apply your experience and knowledge to identify risk and underlying issues on site (often from first principles) make effective decisions on the adequacy of existing control measures and persuade and influence people at all levels to achieve compliance with the law.
We are looking for high calibre engineers who can, under challenge, think strategically, identify underlying core issues, and engage at different levels both with colleagues, site technical staff and at the most senior levels within an organisation. You will be able to influence those organisations to bring about improvements and be decisive and clear about what is needed.
Training and development:
From day one, you will be supported by your manager and colleagues to understand your role in HSE, develop your skills and support you in your continuing professional development. For the legal requirements of the role, you will be enrolled on the Specialist Training Programme (STP) and will be required to study for and successfully complete the Unit. You will receive appropriate training and complete a legal assessment.
Using your electrical engineering knowledge, you will:
Investigate workplace electrical / electrical control system fatalities and other serious incidents to identify the cause and act to prevent reoccurrence. Where necessary, support enforcement action and hold those responsible to account.
Inspect workplaces to make sure that electrical / control system risks are being effectively managed, driving improvements where necessary to achieve compliance with the law.
Prepare technical reports and act as a specialist/expert witness at inquests and in Court during legal proceedings.
Contribute to intervention strategies and plans for industry sectors to reduce the dangers from electricity and improve safety through appropriate designs and use of control systems.
Person specification
You will have:
- Practical experience of having worked in the field of electrical and control system engineering (preferably in a senior role) and have a detailed knowledge in relevant areas which may include but not be limited to: –
- Distribution and use of electricity at both high and low voltage, including safe systems of work.
- Electrical, electronic, programmable (such as PLCs) and safety-related control systems as applied to process control equipment and machinery including risk assessment, design, installation, testing, maintenance and modification.
- Good communication skills to influence change at all levels in the organisations we regulate.
- Sound analytical skills to identify underlying gaps and deficiencies related to risk management.
- Initiative and decisiveness, making sound decisions based on available evidence.
- Good organisational and planning skills taking responsibility for delivering expected outcomes on time and to the required standard.
- The ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, maintaining positive professional working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
- The ability to write effective technical reports and present complex technical information in a clear and concise way for a non-technical audience.

Sift
The sift will take place week commencing 23rd October 2023 where you will be assessed against your CV and Personal Statement.
Interviews
Interviews will take place via Microsoft Teams during weeks commencing 6th & 13th November 2023.
If you are successful at sift and reach interview stage, you will be assessed against the behaviours and technical skills, as advertised, together with your experience and knowledge.
As part of your interview, you will also be required to deliver a 10 minute presentation. Further details of this will be sent out with your interview invite.
Please note that a Reserve List will be held for the period of up to 12 months.
