At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy.

Great Britain’s health and safety record is the envy of much of the world. Central to this is our work to protect people by managing risk in a proportionate and effective way, supporting innovation and increasing productivity.

Our Specialist Pipelines Engineers help Britain’s most diverse and essential industries work safely. In this frontline role you can influence not only individual employers but a whole sector of industry.

Job description

Using your specialist knowledge in our Gas and Pipelines Unit, you will provide advice on pipeline safety and integrity matters, together with more general advice on safety and technical issues associated with gas supply and pipeline operation within HSE, other government departments, industry and external stakeholders.

You will undertake site and operations inspections and audits, of onshore and offshore pipeline systems, giving relevant advice and taking appropriate enforcement action. Make technical and strategic contributions to HSE’s interests in pipeline standards and technical developments.

Regular Offshore visits are required to meet our regulatory programme. These visits typically last between 1 and 5 days. Travel offshore is normally by helicopter.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct specialist assessments and inspections of offshore safety cases and related notifications under Offshore Safety Case Regulations.
  • Assess and inspect notifications received under Pipeline Safety Regulations regarding aspects of design, construction, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance, and decommissioning of major accident hazard pipelines both onshore and offshore.
  • Investigate offshore and onshore incidents individually or as part of a team, giving relevant advice and taking enforcement action where appropriate.

At HSE, we are proud to be able to offer our people the opportunity to work in a hybrid way which combines working from home and the office. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your allocated office will be your contractual place of work. There will be a requirement to travel to the office for various activities e.g., collaborative working, supporting and training colleagues. If hybrid working is suitable for you and your role, the arrangements will be determined primarily by business need, but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. Therefore, we would encourage candidates to consider if the commute from home to the office is a feasible distance to travel before making an application. Please note that if you are successful, hybrid working will be discussed prior to taking up the post.
