Job summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence.

As part of a diverse and inclusive workforce, our team will find a community to belong to – whether that’s alongside project teams with a shared vision or as part of an employee network of like-minded individuals. We believe that, by celebrating different backgrounds and different perspectives, together we’ll achieve the extraordinary.

Job description

Are you an experienced Quality Assurance (QA) engineer who thrives working with different stakeholders? Do you have the ability to build positive relationships in a complex and ever-changing environment? If you are an experienced and motivated Quality Assurance engineer, this is an exciting opportunity for you to join the team in HMNB Clyde.

You will support some of largest and most complex engineering programmes in the world, working at the forefront of marine technology to oversee engineering challenges unique to this industry. Your experience will contribute to project success and provide support to the Royal Navy.

This role will see you have delegated QA authority on Submarine maintenance projects, engaging with delivery portfolios across the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA). You will lead on key deliverables including performing Audits and Investigations, interfacing as intelligent customer to our prime contractors, and ensuring QA risks are captured and assurance plans are implemented to meet contractual requirements.

Due to the nature of this work, working with project teams and suppliers is critical to success. You will be required to uphold strong and productive relationships and provide subject matter expert advice to SDA teams and to our contractors. You will be inducted into a hybrid working environment with an expectation to attend site at least twice a week. Occasional travel between sites may be required.

This post may be eligible for the NSQEP Recruitment Retention Allowance of up to £4,000 per annum. This allowance is discretionary and will be dependent on a candidate’s ability to successfully demonstrate the necessary competency, qualifications, and experience to an independent panel of Subject Matter Experts.

Please be advised that due to the nature of security, these roles are reserved for sole UK Nationals only.

About the role

By joining the SDA, you will have defined progression routes and opportunities to prosper. Training is readily available, and you will be working in an environment that encourages your development. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Ensure quality risks and opportunities are captured and actively managed.
  • Specify contract quality requirements and contribute to supplier selection.
  • Determine quality management and assurance approaches with suppliers and ensure technical risks are understood and managed.
  • Develop QA surveillance and assurance plans in response to supplier, supply chain and technical risk.
  • Conduct and manage the delivery of QA surveillance in support of risk management, supplier oversight/assurance, verification, validation, and acceptance.
  • Contribute to Quality investigations, root cause analysis, performance improvement activities and supplier escalations/interventions.
  • Coordinate and monitor all delivery area quality management and assurance activities including contract quality performance.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Relevant Level 4 qualification (HNC or higher) or equivalent experience
  • Applied knowledge of QA within the acquisition environment supported by expertise in multiple QA specialist areas including Configuration Management.
  • Breadth of industry/manufacturing and QA experience gained from involvement with multiple projects and domains including supply chain engagement.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:

  • 25 days’ annual leave +1 day a year up to 30 days, 8 bank holidays and a day off for the King’s birthday
  • Flexible and hybrid working wherever possible, to support your work-life balance (though some attendance to the stated site is required)
  • Market-leading employer pension contribution of around 27%
  • Annual performance-based bonus and recognition awards
  • Access to specialist training and funded professional qualifications
  • Support for progression
  • Huge range of discounts
  • Volunteering days
  • Enhanced parental leave schemes
  • This post is on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
