Job description
Are you an Engineering Manager with the desire to work on sophisticated, perennial and high-volume engineering programmes? If so, the SDA have incredible opportunities in several UK locations.
As Engineering Manager, you will integrate with accomplished professionals to support assurance deliverables and ensure our submarines are capable, operational and safe to support the Royal Navy. Our opportunities will allow you to migrate across several project teams in the portfolio, gaining full exposure to the organisation whilst operating at the core of what the SDA do. You will work at the forefront of engineering, science and technology to solve challenges unique to our industry and, by linking with fellow minds and allies across the world, will provide a significant contribution to the success of our projects.
In the SDA, continuous professional development is actively encouraged. You will have access to defined upskilling policies, routes to IEng/CEng and support to prosper. You will adopt a hybrid working pattern with an expectation to attend site a minimum of 5 days per month. When attending site, your primary place of work will be one of following locations:

Please be advised that due to the nature of security, these roles are reserved for sole UK Nationals only. Due to there being posts in several locations, SDA reserve the right to offer posts to the highest scoring applicant/s relative to respective location and subject to requirements.
This post may be eligible for the NSQEP Recruitment Retention Allowance of £4,000 to £12,000 per annum. This allowance is discretionary and will be dependent on a candidate’s ability to successfully demonstrate the necessary competency, qualifications, and experience to an independent panel of Subject Matter Experts.
External and internal candidates may be entitled to relocation expenses for this position. This will depend on the outcome of an eligibility check by Defence Business Services (DBS) Barrow in Furness only.
Responsibilities
- Work with colleagues at all levels to ensure compliance with relevant UK legislation and regulations, SDA Policy and MOD regulations.
- Provide specialist advice on the application of Safety Management systems.
- Lead the production and contribute to Safety Management Plans and Arrangements.
- Lead and support the development and management of Safety Cases.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy the SDA corporate standards for Acquisition Safety Management and Regulations.
- Provide Safety Management leadership to the SDA and support a diverse grouping of internal and external stakeholders, with possible line management responsibilities.
- Support safety assurance activities within the various SDA project teams.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, youll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- Hold a Level 4 qualification (i.e., HNC) or higher qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, or you will be able to demonstrate the equivalent experience.
- Experience of providing safety advice and/or delivery of safe products or services in an engineering environment.
- Experience in the use of Safety Management Tools and Processes.
In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
- SYSSAF 1 Compliance with Policy – Practitioner
- SYSSAF4 – Adoption of safety risk management – Practitioner
- Leadership CSBC3
- Communicating and Influencing CSBC3

- Some posts included in this campaign are on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
