The DNO oversees all defence nuclear business (excluding operations) and is responsible for providing nuclear deterrence; sponsoring the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (all the organisations, programmes and people that sustain the UKs nuclear deterrent); and advising on UK nuclear policy, planning and international co-operation on nuclear matters.

The Strategic Systems Performance Analysis and Assessment Group (SSPAG) sits within DNO we provide independent assessment of the Nuclear Deterrent through a programme of technical studies and audits of key Deterrent capabilities. Our assessments are central to senior decision making within the Ministry of Defence and we deliver against one of the Departments top three priorities in a high-profile area which is rarely out of the news.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The role is based in the SSPAG Strategic Assessments team. We undertake bespoke simulation modelling, operational analysis and technical studies in support of the UK submarine fleet.
We also manage and operate our own IT system which provides us with the tools we need to conduct the numerical work that underpins our assessments.
We are looking for someone with a strong scientific or technical background who has a good understanding of cybersecurity and some experience in numerical modelling. Due to the diversity of technical knowledge required for this role, it is essential that you can assimilate information covering a broad range of topics and learn new skills with limited supervision.
Your time will be split 50/50 between two roles.
As a Strategic Assessments Analyst, you will be expected to:

- Use, understand and develop bespoke software tools to conduct analysis relating to submarine performance to support both current operations and future procurement decisions.
As a Cyber Security Coordinator, you will be expected to:

- Provide management and coordination of the Information Assurance activities associated with SSPAGs IT system.
- Develop assurance processes for Information Security, ensuring the protection of classified information held on SSPAGs IT system.
Hybrid and flexible working can be considered for this post but will need regular workplace attendance due to security constraints. Candidates are encouraged to discuss options with the recruiting line manager before submitting an application.

Essential Qualifications:

- A degree (or equivalent) in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subject or other highly numerate subject.
Essential Skills:

- Experience in solving complex technical problems.
- Experience in the use of data analysis tools.
- Experience in acquiring new skills/knowledge with limited supervision.
- Experience in programming in any widely-used programming language, e.g. Java, C++, Python, Fortran, Matlab.
Desirable Skills:

- Experience in information security.
- Experience in cyber security / cyber assurance.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows Server in a business environment.
- Experience with networking on Windows OS.
Qualifications
