The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Job description

Are you an Engineer inspired to work on sophisticated, complex and high-volume defence programmes? If so, the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) have an incredible opportunity for you to join us at HMNB Devonport, Plymouth. 

As an Engineer, you’ll be a delegated authority on design intent and repair schemes insight for our submarine programmes. You will integrate with accomplished professionals and interface as intelligent customer to our prime contractor, Babcock, ensuring design, performance and integration of engineering systems on submarines meet contractual requirements and are aligned with SDA vision. Due to the nature of this work, working with stakeholders is critical to success. Therefore, you will be required to uphold strong relationships and provide subject matter expert advice to SDA and DE&S teams and the wider nuclear enterprise. 

The SDA operate a hybrid working environment and the expectation is that you will attend the site a minimum of three days a week, according to business need/team. When attending site, your primary place of work will be HMNB Devonport, Plymouth, Devon PL2 2BG. Described as Britain’s “Ocean’s City”, Devonport is the largest naval base in Western Europe, offering tangible exposure and visibility to the progress our projects and an excellent work/life balance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the delivery of all engineering aspects in area of responsibility as defined in the assignment specification or objectives including managing the acquisition safety aspects
  • Provide expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify application risks
  • Monitor and implement any governance and assurance policies and procedures to ensure the ‘safe & professional’ status of the area led
  • Interface with industry as the intelligent customer both in a scrutiny role and supporting the identification of application risks

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Relevant Level 4 Qualification (or higher), or equivalent experience
  • Professionally Registered Engineering status (Eng Tech or higher) or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes
  • Wide ranging breadth of technical experience in own specialism with knowledge of Systems Engineering approaches

It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel & Visio
