If so, 1710 Naval Air Squadron wants to hear from you! We are looking for a Deputy Head of our Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) team.
With a heritage dating back to the 1930s and based in Portsmouth Naval Base, 1710 Naval Air Squadron is a mixed Civil Service and Military team of technical specialists from multidisciplinary backgrounds, that uses scientific and engineering reasoning to overcome UK MOD aircraft operational issues to recover, sustain and enhance aviation and general military capability.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The Non-Destructive Testing Team (NDT), which comprises of military and civil service personnel qualified in aerospace NDT to EN4179, provides support to UK military helicopters and some fixed wing fleets by developing and delivering NDT inspections, in addition to the provision of NDT regulation, policy and equipment expertise to ensure the UK Armed Forces rotary wing aircraft are provided with the NDT capabilities needed to assure the structural integrity of the platforms.
The Deputy Head of NDT is the Navy Command (NC) and Joint Helicopter Command (JHC) Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Deputy Head of Profession, accountable to the Head of NDT)/Responsible Level 3 (RL3) for the delivery of NDT within the Frontline Defence Air Environment for Rotary Wing aircraft to assure platform structural and systems integrity.
- Responsibilities
You will be responsible for: - The provision of your in-depth knowledge and expertise to support the existing Level 2s and 3s in the development of NDT inspections.
- Monitoring and influencing the developing of emerging NDT technologies.
- The implementation of new technologies and related policy into service.
- Deputising for the Head of NDT on Inter Command, National and International NDT Committees to ensure RN and JHC NDT requirements are represented at the highest levels.
- As the NDT Deputy Head of Profession, you shall, in the absence of the Commands RL3, undertake the role of the NC and JHC RL3 to ensure compliance with the requirements of the European Standard BS EN 4179 and implementing the NDT training and certification requirements.
Travel opportunities to additional sites, off-site trials, conferences and visits to external partners could be a part of your role.
Person specification
Your previous experience will be invaluable and will include:
- Previous NDT experience
- Relevant technical knowledge
- Strong IT skills
- A UK driving licence would be an advantage but not essential
Due to the large variety of military platforms the teamwork with you will also have an enthusiastic, adaptable and inquisitive approach towards new challenges.
To carry out the responsibilities outlined above, it is necessary for you to have held:
- A Degree/HNC/D or equivalent in NDT or other engineering or science-based discipline.
- Have held at least two EN4179 Level 2 certifications for a minimum of 18 months.
- An EN4179 Level 3 certification or could achieve this within 2 years.
- Ideally you will have operational knowledge of military aircraft and will have previous experience of overseeing technical work of others.
