Job description
The Construction Design Engineer provides the technical/engineering expertise between the Project Manager and the technical/ engineering installation teams. As a Construction Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design of building & construction elements to be installed by FCDO Services teams or external contractors.
Someone with experience of producing construction designs and specifications, you will have a detailed understanding of common construction standards, installation practices and applicable legislation. You thrive under pressure and you are a great problem solver. So: have you ever considered taking your career to a global level?
At FCDO Services, you could do your job, bigger. We protect the UKs interests around the world. We design and construct secure government buildings. We courier diplomatic packages across continents. We help earthquake-proof embassies. We safeguard government tech. And a whole lot more besides. As a Design Engineer, youll design bespoke, complex construction details for installation on projects of vital importance.
Design secure construction to protect overseas missions worldwide
Youve got an in-depth knowledge of construction and the built environment, youre able to produce drawings of construction details as part of your design work, and have experience of selecting or specifying construction materials. You will also be required to produce specifications, produce tender packs that are NEC4 compliant and undertake tender evaluations. Previous experience of using AutoCAD is advantageous, however training would be provided, if needed.
The role holder will be responsible for developing designs up to RIBA Stage 4, covering all aspects of building, construction and related systems installed as part of FCDO Services Secure Construction offering. Whether pulling together a fully coordinated RIBA Stage 4 Technical Design in the UK, or carrying out a Feasibility Study overseas, you will use your expertise in construction to maintain the security of the UKs most sensitive assets.
You will be responsible for ensuring construction designs are compliant with safety guidelines and legal legislation. Youre confident making effective decisions and working collaboratively, so youll be comfortable taking the lead on major projects in the UK and overseas. Able to interpret technical documentation, youll produce and maintain documents for installation practices and standards, maximising efficiencies in the delivery of business. Plus, youll help us develop new products, creating design standards and evaluating products to introduce next-generation solutions.
Provide expert advice that will influence global projects
Youre an expert in construction health and safety and construction design and management regulations. So when youre providing technical advice and helping us resolve technical issues, youll do it all with confidence and clarity. Youll eliminate risk in projects and provide relevant health and safety information to ensure safe and compliant working practices. Youll also communicate with the delivery and installation teams to ensure technical solutions are understood and developed with design in mind. In everything you do, youll be easy to work with, reliable, responsive, and great at building relationships.
Develop the skills you need to help people everywhere
When you join us, youll be contributing to protecting the nations interests at home and overseas. How will we help you in return? As well as a competitive salary, generous holiday entitlement and Civil Service pension, well also support your development with some superb training opportunities to help you advance your career with us. On-site gyms, nurseries, canteens and restaurants are available, as well as interest-free season ticket and bike loans, but if you want to work from home some of the time, we also offer hybrid working opportunities. Above all, its a chance to join a team with rare impact, using your skills to help us protect people, information and assets around the world. In short, its your job, bigger.
Every single colleague must be security cleared before joining us. If youre successful in your application, well ask you to undergo our vetting process to achieve Developed Vetting (DV) clearance.
