Job summary
We are looking to recruit 11 x Senior Design Engineers (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Building Services) to support the technical capability of HMNB Clyde Approving Authority Design.
About the Approving Authority Design
HMNB Clyde Approving Authority Design undertake a vital role in ensuring key defence infrastructure, that interfaces with nuclear powered warships and nuclear weapon systems, continue to be demonstrably safe and fit for purpose.
The work of the Approving Authority (Design) is varied covering all design aspects such as:
- Production, assessment, and approval of engineering designs to ensure compliance with appropriate technical and legislative requirements.
- Production, assessment, and approval of the substantiation of design requirements placed on Nuclear Infrastructure and for design changes/modifications to nuclear safety implicated equipment.
- Production, assessment, and approval of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance, and Testing (EIMT) requirements to ensure infrastructures continued suitability to provide operational and safety functions.
- Assess the impact of defective equipment on safety and reliability. Amend Operating Conditions & Limits where required to ensure the availability of safety system to support operations.
- Support the delivery of the Periodic Review of Safety program, assessing the material state of infrastructure and ageing mechanisms to permit the continued operation of facilities and utilities.
- Represent HMNB Clyde by acting as an Intelligent customer on projects delivered under contract by others.
About HMNB Clyde
HMNB Clyde comprises the Faslane Naval base and Royal Naval Armaments Depot (RNAD) Coulport. HMNB Clydes primary purpose is to provide engineering and logistical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining the UK Strategic Nuclear Deterrent commonly referred to as the Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD).
HMNB Clyde is the single operational home of the Submarine Service supporting all operational classes of submarines, HM Surface Ships including the Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Commando Royal Marines.
RNAD Coulport is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of key elements of the UKs Trident Deterrent Missile System and the ammunitioning of all submarine embarked weapons.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The roles involve working as a Senior Design Engineer within a multi-disciplinary engineering team within the Approving Authority Design. The primary purpose of the role is to directly support current operations and future programmes.
The team consists of Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Building Services Engineers and are responsible for the authorship, development, assessment, and maintenance of engineering design substantiation for Clyde Nuclear Facilities.
- Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance, and management of the suite of Clyde Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
- Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance, and management of design changes/concessions.
- Presentation of Clyde Design substantiations, to Clyde Due Process nuclear safety committees.
- Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures, and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case requirements through life.
- Producing Periodic Review of Safety reports.
- Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
- Production of Independent Technical Review (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR).
- Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
- Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services, and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
- Producing robust technical justification to allow for Civil Engineering design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.

- A minimum HND/HNC in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent.
Desirable:
- Accredited Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent.

Allowances
All 12 posts are on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and will be eligible for a Recruitment and Retention Allowance of up to £12,000 per annum on top of the posts annual salary. The allowance is not immediately payable and successful candidates will have to demonstrate their ability to adequately meet the knowledge, experience and functional competence requirement for the post to receive the RRA.
A further location Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA) is payable subject to candidates with qualifying Reserved Rights.
Please be advised that all pay related allowances are subject to review and all allowances currently payable to this role, could be subject to change or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD policy.

The post does not offer relocation expenses.
