Job description

If so, a dynamic opportunity has arisen for an Engineer to join Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), supporting the UK’s Royal Navy (RN) and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). 

This is an exciting opportunity to be a key member of the Naval Ships Support (NSS) Team. NSS provide in service support to RFA platforms via capability enhancements and addressing obsolescence to deliver and support safe and capable maritime assets for global defence operations. In this role, you will be immersed in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment, supporting the delivery of eight different classes of RFA Ships including two new platforms being brought into service.

 You will have the opportunity to travel to other UK sites and Warships on occasion. Please note, applicants should live within commuting distance of Birkenhead as this job offers limited opportunity to work from home at an agreed schedule with the Delivery Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Be a focal point for design and safety related issues at the waterfront in Birkenhead, acting as a point of contact for key stakeholders
  • Co-ordinating work schedules with industry partners
  • Managing assigned design change requests in a multi-functional environment
  • Supporting the technical queries of refit and docking periods either by on-site resolution or by referral to Capability Desk Officers
  • Attending pre-upkeep ship assessments
  • Contributing to the quality assurance of RFA platforms during maintenance periods ensuring deviation from design guidance is managed accordingly
  • Contributing to the Design Authority policy and business processes
  • Supporting the currency of ship fit definition to ensure the material state portfolio and associated capability maintenance is consolidated in the maintenance management system

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • A minimum of a HNC qualification (e.g., Level 4) in an engineering subject, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Experience working with multi-discipline teams and a variety of stakeholders including contractors
  • Experience in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferably in a maritime domain

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
