Job description

Are you an experienced Engineer with a desire to support our defence capability? We have exciting opportunities for an Engineer to join our Ships Engineering Waterfront team, here in Portsmouth Naval Base. You will provide support to a variety of platforms in the Royal Navy, facilitating the delivery of some of the biggest defence programmes in the UK today!

The Ships Engineering Waterfront team provide specialist expertise across the following disciplines: husbandry (coating, corrosion prevention, bio fouling etc.); habitability (accommodation services, watertight integrity, HVAC etc.), flightdeck safety (flight decks, structures, and services), engineering efficiency projects, trials and integration.

The team undertakes in service assurance and acceptance activities including provide subject matter expertise to the platform operations managers, Platform Chief Engineer, and various in-service support stakeholders, including but not limited to Naval Authority Group and Lloyd’s Register Certificate of Class (CoC’s). To manage and process QEC Class Contractor Involvement Forms for visiting contractors, reviewing the technical requirements, task programming and access/security requirements of the attending personnel. 

Please be advised that this post requires attendance at the stated site. The successful candidate should live within commuting distance as there is limited opportunity for home working. Please note, whilst the primary duty station is HMNB Portsmouth, on occasion you will be required to support activity at other DE&S locations.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to providing oversight and assurance at the waterfront
  • Engineering support to surface ships during fleet time and upkeep in line with waterfront engineering initiatives
  • Support improvement to operational availability through changes to policy, work package content prioritisation, guidance relating to equipment and material performance, safety, through life maintenance etc.
  • Support the planning activities and implementation for Capability Insertion Period (CIP’s), Fleet Time Support Period (FTSP’s), Docking Periods and Deployed Support
  • Liaise with the Defence Quality Audit team and where appropriate, instigate audits in support of engineering assurance
  • Produce reports & recommendations covering, platform material state specifically relating to flight deck, vessel structures, coatings, hotel services (habitability) etc.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Hold a minimum of a HNC qualification (i.e., Level 4) in an engineering related discipline, or demonstrate equivalent relevant experience
  • Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes within a maritime or other engineering environment
  • Have experience of stakeholder management at all levels
