The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of progressive Industrial Placements, which will commence from July 2024 until July 2025.
What we are offering
Were looking for exceptional Scientific Software – Industrial Placements 2024 to help us make a difference to our planet.
As our Scientific Software – Industrial Placements 2024 you will be based at Exeter HQ. We expect all placements to work in a hybrid fashion and suggest three days per week in the office. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you’d prefer.

As our Scientific Software – Industrial Placements 2024, your starting salary will be £25606.00.
Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2025, there is potential for it to develop into an opportunity to join our Graduate Development scheme once you complete your University studies.

Job description
Job Purpose:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year In Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placements all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.
This is a combined recruitment across a number of scientific software engineering areas, from international climate evaluation tools to global weather and climate modelling automation to managing millions of lines of weather and climate code.

You will be trained up to become a local expert in your area and work with scientists and scientific software engineers to deliver real value to the Met Office and to our mission to deliver for the public and our customers.
As our Scientific Software – Industrial Placements 2024, the key duties are:
- Train up in a particular technical speciality within Met Office Science.
- Work with scientists and scientific software engineers to solve technical problems in the scientific domain.
- Work as one team with your colleagues and with the Met Office RSE/SSE community.
- Take on coding projects for Met Office Science and support your own personal development.
Person specification
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- Studying for a degree with a significant numeracy, science (mathematics or a physical science) and/or IT element such as Computer Science or Data Science which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
- Ability to learn and apply software tools and good practice, with knowledge of at least one programming language.
- Demonstrated ability to work using own initiative to solve problems.
- A keen interest in oceanography or climate science.
- Evidence of working, communicating and collaborating well as a member of a team.
