The Department for Business and Trade spans the business and regulatory environment, works to support investment and exports, and opens new markets through removing trade barriers, signing trade deals, and supporting businesses to operate both at home and abroad. Our international work is looking to boost trade and investment with regions across the globe and ensure economic benefit is shared across all regions and nations of the UK.
The UK is a key player in the global rail sector with a well integrated supply chain and competitive, skilled workforce employing around 240,000 people across the UK. The UK has extensive experience and innovation in the rail industry; designing, developing and producing many of the worlds firsts in the rail sector.
This exciting role provides an opportunity to contribute to international policy development on clean growth and sustainable infrastructure development with a focus on the rail sector. You will be responsible for delivering commercial benefits for UK companies whilst supporting clean sustainable transport policies of governments around the world. Further, you will develop and implement strategies for attracting foreign direct investment into a cleaner, greener railway in the UK.

Job description
The post holders will:
- Lead the rail teams input into a number of rail export priority markets.
- Develop an understanding of capability in the UK domestic supply chain and overseas market conditions. This includes building relationships with industry and external stakeholders, market engagement and leading analysis to match UK capability to overseas demand. This should reflect the latest innovations and sustainable solutions and fit with strategic priorities overseas.
- Work collaboratively across several virtual teams, including with other teams across DBT HQ, such as trade policy, domestic policy, UK Export Finance, DBTs overseas network and with other government departments.
- Build a strong relationship with the Railway Industry Association and Rail Forum as the main trade associations, and engage regularly with other key stakeholders in the sector.
- Maintain up-to-date capability materials on the sector, ensuring engagement and input from colleagues and stakeholders.
- Work with investment colleagues, support the ongoing development of the commercial proposition for rail investors and delivery of strategically important rail projects.
- Have the potential to take on management responsibilities.
- Play an active role in developing the team culture.
The role will be based in either Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, London and Salford. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
