This role will be based within the Thames Solent Area Team, who are responsible for delivering environmental outcomes across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, London, Surrey, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight. The team uses a range of mechanisms including land management and planning advice, engagement with stakeholders and direct management of our own land, to achieve the protection and enhancement of biodiversity and landscapes within the patch. Thames Solent is the largest area team in Natural England, in terms of geography and headcount. Covering a large patch of the Southeast and incorporating two National Parks, the vast and diverse landscape in the Thames Solent area makes it a very exciting place to work.

The Sustainable Development Lead Adviser will:

  • Deliver timely, high quality and pragmatic advice to authorities and developers in the Thames Solent area.
  • Proactively work with partners on strategic solutions and projects that take forward 25-year environment plan goals including net gain and nature recovery.
  • Seek and take opportunities to increase the proportion of our time spent on chargeable services that support better environmental outcomes.
  • Contribute to efforts to improve our effectiveness in engaging with planning and development.
  • Invest in personal development and capabilities and support the development of colleagues.
  • Help tell the story of what Natural England is achieving in Thames Solent and why it is important.

 Knowledge, Skills & Experience  

  • Experience of working in the environment and understanding of the ecology and management principles for a variety of habitats and species
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation including policies and procedures relating to SSSI’s, European sites, designated landscapes, and protected species
  • Knowledge of the planning system
  • Good organisational skills and ability to co-ordinate complex work programmes and operational activity

The Role

As a Sustainable Development Lead Adviser for Natural England, you will work in Thames Solent Area Team to advise on Local Development Plans, infrastructure and housing projects and develop new approaches to manage pressures like recreational disturbance, nutrient neutrality, biodiversity net gain.

By engaging early with major developments, we have the opportunity to work collaboratively to avoid negative impacts to the natural environment, provide appropriate mitigation and secure large scale environmental outcomes which benefit nature and people’s connection with nature.

Locations 

Natural England is adopting hybrid working – which means that our staff will work from a flexible range of locations, encompassing home, offices (ours and our partners) and relevant sites. All new staff will be formally linked to one of our 25 offices across England and the expectation is that all new staff will be able to access their local office to be part of the community of staff in their geographic area. Full time staff are expected to attend their associated office for a minimum of one day a week.

Staff members are required to carry out all their duties working in this way and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time. Travel expenses will be paid if work related travel is required but does not apply to travel between home and your associated office.
