MINISTRY OF JUSTICE

Principal Asset Manager

Grade 7

Salary: London: £58,245, National: £54,114 (Based on the breadth of experience of the successful candidate, there is potential for a higher starting salary)

Location: National

About us:

The Ministry of Justice is a major government department at the heart of the justice system. We deliver some of the most fundamental public services including courts, tribunals, prisons, legal services, youth justice, probation services and attendance centres. Our vision is to deliver a world-class justice system that works for everyone in society, and we play a crucial role in our success as a nation – keeping people safe, emphasising fairness, guaranteeing individual rights and giving businesses the confidence to flourish.

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice and provides support for the legal system throughout the country, ensuring justice works for everyone. Our Property Directorate is responsible for managing an estate of over 350 properties in England, Scotland and Wales, and plays a key role in delivering a justice system that is accessible for everyone. The Asset Management function is the Directorate’s in-house real estate specialist.

About the role:

Are you a hands-on problem solver with experience of working with clients in a major corporate environment? Do you have an excellent understanding of property, landlord and tenant law? And most importantly, do you look at issues in the round and take a collaborative and diplomatic approach to your work? If you do, this challenging and dynamic role is for you, one where you’ll join a small and technically astute team which acts as an internal centre of real estate knowledge. Using all your skills and expertise, you’ll work with a number of internal clients and external property and legal consultants and resolve a wide range of complex issues.

But your work won’t stop here – you’ll also deliver best value to our organisation as you manage a commercial supply chain and coordinate the delivery of HMTC’s future real estate needs. This will involve working with operational and strategy teams on the parameters of lease and occupational constraints, managing the continuity of occupation in existing buildings, and maintaining a holistic oversight of our property portfolio to support capital investment and other areas of the function.

Travelling when required to various regions of the country as you provide a seamless service to our clients, you’ll also direct the delivery of freehold and leasehold acquisitions, disposals incorporating overage agreements, complex lease re-gearing, development agreements, high value dilapidations claims, landlord and tenant issues, and contentious litigation. This is a role where no day will be the same as the next, and you’ll use all your knowledge and experience to provide a better justice service for everyone.

About you:

With superb team working skills and the ability to engage with everyone from senior members of the judiciary to external contract tradespeople, your friendly, approachable attitude will make you a ‘go-to’ member of our team. Always ready to use your initiative to build engagement and deliver positive results, you’ll have high levels of integrity and proven experience of working on transactions that involve a range of complex legal and technical issues.

RICS qualified in an appropriate discipline, we’ll expect you to have significant experience of asset management in a corporate or public sector environment. An inspirational communicator with the skills to work positively across organisational boundaries and challenge the status quo in a constructive way, you’ll be a motivating partner and team worker. Always ready to see the bigger picture, you’ll be committed to change and improvement, and to managing a service of the highest quality.

About our benefits:

We reward our people for their hard work and commitment. We have a number of family friendly and flexible working polices that will help you achieve a healthy work-life balance. In addition, we offer a range of employee benefits which include generous annual leave, a highly competitive contributory pension scheme, childcare benefits, season ticket and bicycle loans.

Proud to Serve. Proud to keep justice going.
