The Health and Safety Advisor at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose is responsible for providing specialist advice and assistance across a wide range of activities, including many areas carrying out aircraft maintenance. We are co-located with the Air Safety team and form an Integrated Safety Centre. The work is extremely varied and covers a diverse range of tasks including developing and maintain safe workplaces, advising on safe use of equipment and infrastructure and providing assurance through audits and inspections.
Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose delivers the UKs two highest defence priorities: assuring the nuclear deterrent and protection of the nations aircraft carriers. An operational Air Station, Culdrose has a workforce of more than 3000 personnel that are all directly or indirectly involved in generating or supporting the naval air squadrons and their personnel.
The position is advertised at 37 hours per week, with the majority of that time requiring on site attendance to meet the business need.
Navy Command are currently going through a review and there is a possibility that within 6-12 months the role applied for may be subject to change.
Job description
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive health and safety advice and assistance. and will also be appointed as the Radiation Safety Officer. Specific responsibilities are based on the Plan, Do, Check, Act methodology.
Plan To manage the following plans:
- Internal HS&EP audits and advisory visits
- Noise at work plans and assessments
- Ionising and non-ionising radiations, including radon
Do To implement, deliver and undertake:
- To provide specialist advice to managers at RNAS Culdrose and outstations to enable them to discharge their legal Health and Safety obligations
- To manage the HS&EP audit programme
- To use specialist monitoring equipment and software to assess noise exposure risks and lead on management of noise
- To closely liaise with line managers, and specialists for occupational health & hygiene matters
- To carry out qualitative Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) fit tests and training
- To undertake workplace visits and surveys using specialist instruments and software including surface analysis and illumination levels
- Act as the focal point for all matters associated with manual handling, including briefing individuals
- To provide health and safety briefings and local training
- To investigate accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences and cases of work-related ill health producing reports
- To be appointed as Radiation Safety Officer in accordance with DSA01 and JSP 392 and fulfil the duties
- To be an active member of the Safety, Health, Environment & Fire (SHEF) meeting and working groups
- To deputise for the HEO HS&EP Advisor
- Provide basic advice and assistance on Environmental Protection matters in conjunction with other members of the HS&EP team
- Provide support to other members of the Integrated Safety Centre to enable team objectives to be met
Check – to understand effectiveness:
- Carry out HS&EP inspections, audits and benchmarking tasks producing reports with recommendations.
- To participate in the Maritime Aviation Assurance Cycle (MAAC) audits
- To be a member of head of departments Rounds and other visits or inspections
- Host Radiation Protection Advisory visits
Act – to undertake corrective action and continuous improvement
- To prepare documentation for management review
- To review occurrence reports and ensure corrective actions are completed

Person specification
We are looking for someone who is energetic, enthusiastic, and used to working collaboratively within a team to join us at RNAS Culdrose.
Domain specific experience in aviation or engineering will be advantageous to underpin your ability to provide competent health and safety advice.
You will have an understanding of health and safety management, legal requirements and responsibilities.
You will also possess excellent skills for written communication and can produce clear, precise and well-written material.
The ability to build and maintain strong, effective relationships with our squadrons, departments and industry partners is important.

UK Driving Licence – Cat B
Qualifications:
A NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) would be advantageous, but training could be provided for the right candidate.
