Job summary

Dstl we are leaders within Science and Technology and to support this we require a Radiation Protection Officer to support and manage the demands required to deliver the highest quality S&T. The role sits within the Corporate Health & Safety team that is within the Safety, Security and Resilience group within the Operations division. This role is required by MOD to be the central focal point for Dstl, representing the Head of Establishment, this person will be the integral part of ensuring the appropriate legislation, assurance and radiation requirements are adhered to and that suitable resources are available, you will act as the intelligent customer with the appropriate contractors to ensure delivery across Dstl.

The role requires independent thinking and being able to see the bigger picture whilst delivering a quality service over an enduring period.

The RPO is to act on behalf of the Head of Establishment (HoE) for 4 principle tasks:

  1. Be the central point of compliance assurance with legislation and MOD requirements for ionising and non-ionising radiation;
  2. Fulfil the responsibilities of the MOD Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)1;
  3. Be Dstl’s Intelligent Customer for requesting support from the outsourced service provider; and
  4. Be the permanent chair of the Radiation Safety Technical Authority (RAD STA).

Job description

In this role you will:

  • Be the focal point for support on radiation safety to the HoE and other Dstl staff and to consult the RPA for radiation protection advice about matters for which the RPA has been appointed (see JSP 392, Chapter 7).

  • Monitor the Radiation Protection Supervisor and Work Place Managers in the discharge of their duties through support and assurance activities;
  • Carry out regular reviews of radiation safety arrangements, including an audit of procedures and local orders, against the requirements of legislation and MOD publications.
  • Be the focal point for capturing and setting requirements for contracting radiation sciences support from the outsourced provider and undertaking assurance that these services are delivered on time to the required standard.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Can see the bigger picture and plan for the future

  • Can act as the intelligent customer for Radiation Safety in Dstl
  • Has a broad spectrum of experience and knowledge for H&S,IRR17 and JSP392
  • Be able to manage expectations and influence behaviour and change
