Job description

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is a bespoke trading entity and arm’s length body of the Ministry of Defence. Our purpose is to equip and support the UK’s Armed Forces for operations now and in the future. We work in partnership with industry, academia, and allies to deliver innovative solutions that meet our customers’ needs.

 

DE&S are looking for an OHSE Lead to join their team in Abbey Wood in Bristol. Although an OHSE role, this position is embedded within the DE&S Infrastructure specialism and will work on behalf of the Head of Establishment to ensure that the establishment maintains compliance to all Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.

 

We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic OHSE Lead to join our team and support the OHSE specialism by leading Health & Safety site compliance, investigations, reviews, and reporting with an Infrastructure focus.

 

You will enjoy working in a busy and challenging role where the ability to make decisions and offer competent guidance is critical. You will need to have strong communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders to achieve compliant practices and behaviours.

 

You will have responsibility for maintaining a safe place of work and assuring (on behalf of the Head of Establishment) that primary OHSE legislation and DE&S policy is being met.

Please note that while the role offers flexible working, the successful candidate will need to be flexible to attend site as required, occasionally on short notice, so must be in a commutable distance to the site.

Responsibilities

  • Acting as a point of competent advice across the business
  • Achieving and maintaining compliance with H&S and EP legislation and regulations
  • Developing site focused policy an maintaining the local Safety and Environment Management System (SEMS)
  • Deliver effective communications to inform and engage stakeholders
  • Lead on contractor control and safe working while on site
  • Lead investigations, audits and assurance reviews, identifying key learning points to drive continuous improvement
  • Manage a team of 3 staff members, supporting their training and development where appropriate

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 5/6 qualification, to be held or qualification started within 6 months and to attained within 3 years.
  • NEBOSH Level 3 General Certificate or equivalent level 3 qualification
  • Relevant work experience across a similar role.
  • Professional Membership: to hold or attain during employment Graduate IOSH

It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Previous experience with Audit and Assurance activities
