Job Purpose

We are looking for an engaging, enthusiastic and driven Product Manager to join our Product Management Team in Future Production.

Product Management is an established profession within the Met Office with an active Community of Practice group offering support and best practice. We’re a supportive and proactive team and work together to develop Product Management skills aligned to the Digital Data and Technology framework.

You will be responsible for product owner and product management tasks working closely with an expert science team to ensure new and existing weather data from our Supercomputer is available in the right formats and timescales for our downstream users.

You will be responsible for gathering product requirements focussed on user needs– ratifying them against Met Office strategy, the product vision and business milestones. before ‘translating’ into user stories for delivery. You’ll create a prioritised roadmap to ensure successful delivery against timelines.

As our Product Manager, your key responsibilities are:

  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of users and their current and future needs, including understanding their workflow and the problems they need to solve through effective observation, communication and analysis.
  • Develop current and potential customer domain knowledge and product expertise – translating into user stories for the science development team. 
  • Develop and communicate a product vision, strategy and roadmap based on user needs and Met Office requirements.
  • Maximise the value delivered – taking into account the balance between delivering business benefits and responding to end user needs.   
  • Make strategic prioritisation decisions, influencing stakeholders using evidence, user insight to inform backlog prioritisation and future lifecycling needs.
  • Manage dependencies of development on other directly/indirectly related systems or products.  
  • Fulfil the Product Owner role, act as a key member of the delivery team to use Agile principles, adapt, challenge, reflect and improve ways of working, to deliver effective solutions.  
  • Show high levels of collaboration, trust and innovation and contribute towards building a high performing team.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the science landscape and the high level value stream in which this team operates in order to produce effective communications.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. Force for good – A strong user/customer focus with experience building trusted relationships and using that to improve products or services.
  2. Live and breathe it – Practical experience of gathering user requirements and translating into prioritised deliverables and activities.
  3. Expert by nature – A track record of taking ownership for key projects or activities and delivering them within a given timeline, identifying priorities and risks and recognising when to escalate to support decision making.
  4. Better together – Proven experience of working in multi-faceted teams.
  5. Better together – Evidence of strong communication skills including influencing and negotiating.
  6. Keep evolving – Demonstrable experience delivering within Agile development teams.
Alongside your salary of £38,838, Met Office contributes
£10,486 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

As our Product Manager, your total reward package is potentially worth up to £53,757.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Your starting salary will be £38,838.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £41,725.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £45,257.00 over time.
