Job summary
The Cabinet Office is undergoing a significant Digital Transformation. Over the next three years we aspire to make UK Government digital services the best in the world, meeting or exceeding the benchmark set globally by the best public or private sector standards. For us to meet this ambition we are aiming to further improve the conditions, processes and expertise we have in place to be set up for success. This means we need to go much further and faster and strengthen the delivery of DDaT in government.
To support these ambitions we have established a new CO Digital directorate for the Cabinet Office to build on existing strengths. The Cabinet Office Co Digital directorate is based on six principles to:

The role is part of the Technology Pillar which provides, maintains and supports the infrastructure, telephony, network, WiFi, end-user devices, cloud capability and software across the entire Cabinet Office estate. Our user base includes the Cabinet Office, Crown Commercial Services, Estates and Government Property Agency.
Job description
The Enterprise Services Team is part of Cabinet Office Digital based in the Cabinet Office. It provides, maintains and supports the IT services (hosted and public cloud IT infrastructure, telephony, network security, internet connectivity, local area networks, WiFi, end-user devices, cloud capability and full software portfolio) relied upon by the entire Cabinet Office. Our user base of over ten thousand includes the Cabinet Office, Crown Commercial Services, Government Property Agency and a number of Ministers.
This role is within Network Operations team supporting the Enterprise Services, to lead the Network team and provide product and services including support to the organisation.
As Lead Network Operations Engineer, you will lead a highly skilled team to deliver the product and services to Cabinet office. You will also have the opportunity to work with complex Projects to deliver the optimum results.
Responsibilities
- Focus on completing tasks to maintain integrity, availability, performance and capacity management of the networking infrastructure.
- Establish the networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation and defining, documenting and enforcing system standards
- Manage escalated Incidents and Problems from the Live Service through to resolution.
- Carry out change control activities within the networking infrastructure,
- Manage Request for Change forms for internal and supplier change management
- Understand risk and impact of changes
- Document and configure management of networking infrastructure
- Work within technical compliance management to co-operate with technologies, such as PSN and Cloud computing etc.
- Team Management including recruiting and performance management.
- Occasional travel to the site(s) is required.
Person specification
It is essential that you have:
- Network Design, installation and fault finding experience.
- Experience of change management processes.
- Experience in an enterprise IT related role.
- Professional skills including excellent customer relationship and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage with and gain the confidence of colleagues at all levels.
- Technical expertise in supporting and administering Networks.
- Network monitoring and analysis of trends
- Mentor team members on technical issues, including day to day management of the Team
- LAN design/architecture data centres and branch office levels
- Network technologies IP, Ethernet, Switching, VLANS and good knowledge in network security practices.
- In-depth understanding of communication protocols (mainly TCP/IP) and routing protocols (e.g. BGP, OSPF)
Juniper and Cisco Switches/ Cisco ASA, Fortigate & Palo Alto Firewalls skills at expert level - Aerohive management and Access Points (desirable) or similar WiFi management experience including troubleshooting WiFi issues.
- Experience working with AWS Multi Account, TGW, VPCs and Route53.
Desirable skills
- Encryption solutions such as PKI and IPSec
- F5 application delivery controllers, load balancing
- 2 Factor Authentication Products: Duo, radius, and LDAP
- Familiarity with legislation pertaining to Government/Public Sector IT.
- Understanding of virtualisation products.
- JNCIA/JNCIS, F5, Palo Alto Networks certifications.
