Job summary

This is an exciting 11-week paid placement, starting in September 2024, you’ll use your Russian language skills and cultural knowledge to make a real impact on our operations. Day to day, you’ll develop your understanding of language as you analyse, transcribe, and translate audio and written materials. Some of these materials may be technical or specialised in nature, giving you a chance to master new skills in a unique field. But your growth doesn’t stop there.

Job description

Here, your influence goes beyond language. Your cultural understanding will be invaluable as you collaborate closely with customers and partners, providing crucial context and delivering briefings to your team. In fact, you may even get the chance to create intelligence reports during your time with us. Armed with a variety of special tools, you’ll conduct research and uncover valuable insights that you’ll then present back to your team. Your skills will have a genuine impact and you’ll be making a vital contribution to UK security, working as part of a mixed team of experienced Analysts and Language Analysts.

Person specification

We’re looking for talented, adaptable, and committed people from all backgrounds. You’ll either be in the final year of your undergraduate degree in Russian or have graduated in summer 2020 or later with a 2:2 grade or above in Russian. We want people who are keen to use their language skills and eager to improve. You don’t need a technical background for this role. But you must be interested in using language in your career and keen to develop your skills, including new technical ones which complement your language abilities.

Training and Development

From day one, we’re here to support you. When you join GCHQ, you’ll receive comprehensive language and analysis training, including classroom and hands-on learning to boost your skills. Along with this, you’ll also be paired with a language mentor who will help you settle in and enhance your Russian skills.

On completion of the programme, you can apply for a permanent position with us. If successful in your interview and tests, you’ll join a vibrant community of specialists as a Language Analyst. But your journey doesn’t stop there.

During your first five years as a Language Analyst, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for our Language Career Development Scheme. This scheme is designed to broaden and refine your language skills, as you develop your language and analytical skills and acquire additional coaching and mentoring skills, there’s the opportunity to progress to a more senior role with greater responsibility. Additionally, you’ll also have the chance to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) and gain recognised professional linguist qualifications.

Rewards and Benefits

At GCHQ, you’ll receive a starting salary of £5,746 for the 11-week internship. Applicants who pass the end-of-programme entry language tests and accept an offer of employment will receive a starting salary of £32,092.  Upon successful completion of the 6-month probationary period, you’ll be eligible for an additional payment of £3,000 per annum in recognition of your language skill.

Along with this, and on the Language Talent Programme you’ll also enjoy:

  • 5 days of annual leave during the internship
  • Access to a subsidised gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars in the Cheltenham office
  • An excellent city centre location with multiple transport links in the Manchester office
