Job summary

The FGen Business Unit provides the Royal Navy’s Scheduling Authority, its In-Service Capability Management, an Intelligent Customer function and, discharges legislative Duty Holding Responsibilities/Risk to Life management.  Dir FGen’s Portfolio includes DD Ships, DD SM, DD Avn, DD Logs, DD LS. Naval Bases Clyde, Devonport and Portsmouth; Air stations Yeovilton and Culdrose, AFSUP and Logistics policy and wider. 

The FGen BU contributes to achieving the Defence Tasks set out each year in the Defence Plan and key activity & deliverables set out in the annual Royal Navy Command Plan.

The primary function of the Category Manager role is to manage the range of commodities that they are responsible for with a ‘cradle to grave’ approach. 

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing a portfolio of projects to improve, change, or introduce new requirements; understand and communicate the demand signal for their categories; hold our Delivery Partner and Delivery Agent to account, ensuring continuity of supply with minimal impact to service personnel.
  • Proactively identify and promote continuous improvement for their own categories and look for opportunity within the wider department.
  • Act as the interface between Navy Command and the Supply Chain, providing direction and guidance as required. This includes representing at a range of working groups.
  • Where we are the Capability area, ensure funding lines are in place for existing and new requirements, and process ILR / FCR and bids for new money, when necessary, through close relationships with Finance teams. For all categories, ensure budgetary monitoring and allocation is undertaken and reported to C1, in line with Letter of Delegation.
  • Act as the Intelligent Customer for all categories, ensuring a clear demand signal is provided. Ensure any CASP agreements are updated and applied, using this to hold suppliers to account.
  • Engage with the user community through the use of surveys, meetings and other engagement tools to drive improvements.
  • Act as focal point for supply chain issues that have been escalated to NCHQ by units. Work with DP and CMO to ensure prompt and appropriate action is taken to resolve immediate issues and create mitigation plans for future use. Maintain the strong relationship with our customers by ensuring their voices are heard. Give guidance on ways to alleviate any initial supply shortages and track these issues, highlighting any increasing trends to the CMO for investigation.
  • Act as POC for Direct Supply/E-Cat contracts applicable to their categories.
  • Line Management of 1 x Band D employee.
  • Complete ad-hoc tasks as requested by the customer service C1.

Person specification

The post-holder should have knowledge and experience of:

  • Logistics/stock management, ideally within the maritime environment.  
  • Requirements setting and project Management.
  • A sound working knowledge of MS Office.

Technical:

MSCIPs, CILT or MOD Supply Chain Management qualifications would be an advantage.
