Job summary

The FSA is a non-ministerial department of over 1300 people. Having left the EU, we play a critical role in protecting public health and consumers’ wider interests in food across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our vision is an important one – to drive change, delivering “food we can trust” and working towards a healthier and more sustainable food system.

A central feature of the FSA’s role is the protecting of public health through the shaping and delivery of official controls relating to the food that finds its way to plates across the country at every meal. From contaminants to food-borne diseases, our controls act as a way of stopping dangerous food from reaching the consumer. We are constantly at work to ensure the regulations that are in place are robust enough, whilst also helping to implement them, working closely with local authorities across the width and breadth of England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

We have an exciting role available for a Shellfish Official Controls Adviser to join our team and help with our continued efforts to deliver our controls with regards to live bivalve molluscs such as oysters, mussels and scallops.

Job description

Working with colleagues to monitor the delivery of our shellfish hygiene controls at primary production, you will work to ensure that standards are met in our monitoring programmes for phytoplankton, biotoxins and chemical contaminants, among others. Using knowledge, evidence and collaboration with colleagues, you will determine the appropriate classification and classification review of shellfish harvesting areas.

You will be taking on a varied role that is always interesting, leading on data reviews, building strong working relationships with colleagues at the FSA and external partners, and ensuring the robust and ongoing delivery of our official controls across the shellfish industry. Assisting in the management of external delivery contracts and other matters that support our delivery of these vital checks, you’ll play an important role in maintaining the team’s high standards and ensuring bivalves from the UK are safe to eat.

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate looking to use their data interpretation skills to benefit consumer health. If you can make the right decisions and deliver them at pace, communicating the needs of the Agency to stakeholders and working closely alongside the rest of the team, we will look forward to hearing from you.
