Job description

In March 2020, Government published the response to The Godfray review of the TB Strategy, setting out the directional travel of bovine TB control in England. This includes changes to the current wildlife control and cattle surveillance policies, and early work on the potential roll-out of cattle vaccination.

This role forms part of the wider Animal Health and Welfare Advice Team in APHA, focussing on the provision of scientific advice on bovine TB to policy makers, APHA and relevant stakeholders.

The team is embedded within the Defra TB Programme as part of the TB Evidence Team, which also includes statisticians, economists and social researchers.

The Higher Scientific Officer (HSO) will work closely with the Defra policy team and the TB evidence community, including APHA scientists in the Science Directorate and scientists in academia and the private sector.

You will assist on a range of policy issues, from policy development to briefing senior officials including the Chief Veterinary Officer.

You will have an ability to quickly assess available evidence and present, both written and verbal, to a varying audience.

You will also be involved in managing research projects, supporting the continued implementation of the response to the Godfray Review, and answering parliamentary questions and other correspondence.

Person specification

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate the below skills and experience: 

  • Experience working within and across multi-disciplinary teams, including internal and external stakeholders
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent IT literacy, in particular with Microsoft packages and other data management software
  • Experience of building strong, collaborative relationships with industry bodies
  • Proficient in interpretation and critiquing of scientific literature, often at speed
  • You will need to be a strong science communicator, with the ability to convey complex matters to a lay-audience, whilst retaining the ability to discuss the detail when required

Selection process details

Sift

Location

Please be aware that this role(s) will be contractually based in a Defra group workplace/office. The successful candidate is required to carry out all their duties from a UK location, and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time.

Internal (core Defra) employees can apply for this role and choose to remain in their current location or to be based in one of the advertised locations.

All other applicants will be based in one of the advertised locations.Our current office attendance approach requires 60% attendance in Defra group workplaces or off site meetings with partners and customers. This balance provides thriving workplaces to connect with colleagues, as required by their role and business team needs balanced with personal flexibility and choice. 

Travel and subsistence will not be paid for travel to a base office location.

Reserve List 

A reserve list may be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.

Loan and Fixed Term Appointments

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Scientific Advisor on the TB Evidence Team. The post is not permanent. It is time limited due to a fixed funding period or as part of a specific project. The fixed term will end when the funding or the project expires.        

Your responsibilities will include those shown on the Responsibilities section of the advert. This post will therefore begin from the agreed start date and end on 01/03/25.
