Job description

We look forward to reading your application for the role of Practice Developer – What Works Standards.

The selected candidate will work in partnership to improve policing through the development of  evidence-based professional practice standards and guidelines for policing by: drafting evidence based practice guidance in collaboration with police practitioners, academics and college subject matter experts; engaging and consulting  with stakeholders and members of the public, using a range of qualitative research skills; interpreting and synthesising a range of evidence and good practice; facilitating stakeholders to reach consensus on the best guidance to support improvements in policing across England and Wales.

Person specification

Some of your responsibilities will include:
•    Scope and draft policing guidance in consultation with relevant stakeholders; 
•    Carry out research to understand the evidence base for guidance including qualitative research with practitioners. 
•    Facilitating group discussions in order to reach consensus. 

To be successful in this role you’ll need:
•    Degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification, or equivalent level of experience in a related field
•    Experience of evaluating and integrating research information from a variety of sources, coming to logical conclusions and communicating this effectively to non-specialists
•    Experience in drafting high-quality reports
•    Thorough understanding of the principles of evidence-based practice

Technical skills

We’ll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Experience with the principles and/or application of systematic review methods and preparation of evidence summaries and high-quality reports
  • Collaborative working in project teams with internal and external stakeholders, establishing and maintaining positive working relationships
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of evidence-based practice, critical appraisal and the interpretation and synthesis of research evidence
  • Effective and persuasive communicator demonstrating oral, written and presentation skills and a high degree of personal credibility and sensitivity
  • Ability to present and facilitate discussion on highly complex, sensitive and/or contentious information, where persuasive and empathetic skills may be necessary to gain acceptance from a sceptical and/or hostile audience
  • Ability to gather data, analyse, critique and synthesise complex information and prepare reports and briefing documents
  • Ability to work independently, prioritising work efficiently to achieve tight deadlines
