The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

We are a team of around 400 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

We also have colleagues based in Defra offices, including Bristol, Cambridge and York where we share office space.

Summary

This influential and rewarding role offers you the opportunity to use your geospatial knowledge and management skills to support and improve the Marine Management Organisation’s (MMO) capability to gain insights, make decisions, and communicate across all areas of work, particularly Marine Planning, Marine Licensing, and Fisheries Management.

Description

This role sits within the Data, Technical Assurance, and Information  (DTI) Team, part of the Digital & Analysis (D&A) Directorate.

You will use agile service and product owner skills and techniques to discover user needs and lead the strategic development and technical implementation of geospatial data, metadata and GIS solutions across the organisation. You will also represent MMO business needs in Defra Group digital and data transformation activities. 

You will lead and develop you team in the analysis, management, distribution and publication of geospatial data, tools, and applications.

You will have the opportunity to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and suppliers. With a passion and enthusiasm for the real-world application of geospatial data and GIS, you will help provide direction and build a positive inclusive team to champion user need and deliver strategic solutions for a UK government regulator. 

You will work closely with colleagues across the DTI team, to coordinate and champion your inter-related services.

Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Manage and develop a team of data and GIS officers
  • Manage and develop the MMO ESRI ArcGIS Platform to meet user and business needs, and provide value for money
  • Lead the provision of technical support and advice on the analysis, management and presentation of marine geospatial data
  • Ensure the appropriate documentation of MMO GI processes and systems
  • Develop a GI community of practice to ensure knowledge sharing and consistency in GI analysis and management across the MMO.
  • Lead the development of guidance on GIS, including relevant policies, training, and communications.
  • Build and foster close relationships with Defra Group GIS colleagues to ensure that common data and GIS policy and solutions meet MMO needs.

Travel may be required to MMO’s Head Office in Newcastle upon Tyne for occasional team meetings/face-to-face contact.
