The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of progressive Industrial Placements, which will commence from July 2024 until July 2025.
Were looking for an exceptional Engineering and Observations Industrial Placement 2024 to help us make a difference to our planet.
As our Engineering and Observations Industrial Placement 2024 you will work a hybrid pattern and will be on site at Exeter HQ. We expect all placements to work in a hybrid fashion and suggest one day a week but at a minimum, once a month, coming on site. However given the practical nature of this placement there maybe some periods where the placement may need to be on site more often. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you’d prefer.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year In Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placement all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.
As our Engineering and Observations Industrial Placement 2024, your key responsibilities are:
- To further develop a magnetic loop antenna which is capable at detecting the radio wave emitted by a lightning strike.
- Combine two magnetic loop antennas orthogonally to enable direction finding of a lightning strike.
- To design and produce a version of the orthogonal loop antenna which can be interfaced with our existing LEELA VLF receiver and be deployed in the field for field trials.
- Analyse lightning waveform data from the loop antennas from the field trials
- Perform signal processing to extract current intensity and lightning classification from the loop antenna field test data.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- Be an expert by nature in designing and building electronic circuits.
- Undertaking a degree with strong physics and/or electrical and mechanical engineering components
- Be able to use CAD software packages to design physical components.
- Demonstrate you can keep evolving by further developing your data analysis skils using programming languages such as Python or R
- Able to demonstrate we’re better together by showing experience of working on a problem as a team

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2025, there is potential for it to develop into an opportunity to join our Graduate Development scheme once you complete your University studies.
