As part of the FCDO Estate Operations team within the Estates, Security and Network Directorate (ESND), the Sustainability team work to meet the FCDO’s Greening Government Commitments (GGCs), as well as the challenge of delivering a Net Zero strategy for the overseas estate, advocating for sustainability within the FCDO and raising awareness.

We provide sustainability advice, auditing, training services, delivery and monitor guidance and policy on all matters of sustainable operations.  We cover issues that include climate change, the reduction of all greenhouse gas emissions to align with the His Majesty’s Government (HMG) drive to net zero emissions, carbon footprint benchmarking and reduction, environmental management, avoidance of single use plastics and changing technologies that will have a direct impact on the FCDO and HMG sustainability agenda.

Job description

Roles and Responsibilities

As Sustainability Manager, you will be responsible for managing and reporting FCDO’s environmental performance and monitoring information as well as developing and implementing projects that help achieve sustainability targets. The successful candidates will also promote sustainability to ensure the FCDO remains at the forefront of sustainability, ensuring knowledge and expertise is transferred across the entire organisation.

The successful candidates will:

  • Lead on the management of environmental performance information, via evaluation of performance data, identification of trends and investigation of anomalies.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting of environmental performance information to internal and external bodies, presenting data in an engaging and informative way.
  • Liaise with Facilities Management contractors, suppliers and colleagues from across FCDO to develop and implement sustainability plans and projects that help achieve sustainability targets. You will provide advice and support as needed for other sustainability projects.
  • Establish effective networks across FCDO and other UK Government departments, ensuring we share, learn from and build on good practices and identify opportunities to raise environmental awareness in relation to wider corporate and FCDO objectives.
  • Develop internal communications plan as part of Destination Zero campaign and provide support to posts on environmental issues.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of environmental policies, reports and papers to FCDO boards and ministers; respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) and Parliamentary Question (PQ) requests in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Act as secretariat for the Sustainable Operations and Programme Board by developing agendas; drafting, commissioning and quality assuring papers; circulating papers to members; issuing accurate minutes; working with Communications Directorate to communicate decisions to the organisation; maintaining the action and decision tracker.
  • Monitor, review and audit compliance with FCDO’s Environmental Management System (EMS).

Person specification

It is essential in your application that you provide evidence and proven examples in each of the following Minimum Criteria, the Behaviours and the Technical question as far as you are able to do so. Minimum Criteria

  • Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or willing to work towards this.
  • Confident with numbers and experience of analysing and developing data in Excel.
  • Keen to develop or build on understanding of environmental management and environmental management systems (e.g. ISO14001).
  • Awareness of UK Government’s sustainability agenda, Greening Government Commitment and DEFRA’s 25 year environment strategy.
  • Experienced with communicating information to a range of stakeholders in engaging and informative ways.
  • Experienced and resilient to manage multiple projects concurrently, with the ability to meet tight deadlines.

Memberships

Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or willing to work towards this.
