Job description
As the UK is a newly independent coastal state, this is a really exciting time to be joining the MMO and to be involved in fisheries management, as we embed new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment.
From a fisheries perspective, the UK is now responsible for managing fishing-related activities in its own waters, and the UK Government has set a clear ambition to become world class in its approach to this. The MMO has a significant role to play in this in English waters, as recognised through its strategic goal of delivering sustainable fishing opportunities.
As part of the Sustainable Fisheries function of the MMOs Operations Directorate, the Fisheries Management Team has a key role to play on this through the provision of effective and customer-focused fisheries services, as well as leading on the development and delivery of new approaches to fisheries management at a national, regional and more local level. Owing to the increasing importance and scale of this work, leadership of the Fisheries Management Team is being split into two G7 team leader roles, of which the Head of Fisheries Management (Fishing Opportunities) role is one. Between them, these two team leaders will be responsible for the successful and effective delivery of the Teams activities and in doing so, ensuring that it works in partnership across the MMO, with senior colleagues within Defra, its arms-length bodies and the UK Fisheries Administrations as well as senior representatives in the fishing industry, recreational fishing sector and environmental non-government organisations.
As much of the Teams work is new, the nature of these roles will develop over time and the postholder will need to adapt to any changing responsibilities that this may bring. For core responsibilities please see candidate pack.
