We’re looking for an Expert Operational Meteorologist to help us make a difference to our planet.

Job description

As our Expert Operational Meteorologist you will work a hybrid pattern and will be required on site at least four days per month. This post is nominally based in Exeter but we may be able to offer other UK Met Office locations depending on availability and suitability for the role. Job Purpose

The creation of our Expert Weather Hub this year has broadened the roles of our Expert Meteorologists, formalising the links between operations, research and innovation.

As an Expert Operational Meteorologist joining the Hub, you will have a pivotal role in providing operational weather guidance. This covers the short period through to seasonal, as well as the UK and Global in order human intervened Met Office output is accurate and consistent.

You will be vital in co-ordinating and delivering NSWWS warnings and will make or support high pressure, high impact decisions in a fast-paced environment. This role enables operational teams in the UK and around the globe to deliver outstanding customer service so that Government, its agencies, the general public, industry and the Met Office stay safe and thrive.

As an Expert in our Meteorology profession your role takes two forms:

  • Operational delivery (80%) – shift working and delivering world leading meteorological guidance and advice,
  • Non-operational research and development (20%) – driving improvements and innovation in Met Office science, process and output.

Our shift working roster is issued roughly 8 weeks in advance and covers a variety of working patterns as part of an operational 12 hour shift roster, including night shifts. Standard operational shift timings are as follows: Day (0630-1845), Night (1830-0645). Approximately 20% of your time will be non-operational and will be worked flexibly as per personal preference. As such, your working days may be different each week and include weekends and public holidays.

As our Expert Operational Meteorologist, your key responsibilities are:

  • Support the Principal Meteorologist to maintain the operational delivery of the National Severe Weather Warning Service to ensure delivery of key PWS milestones.
  • Deliver meteorological guidance, products and advice commensurate with the Expert level, driving consistency and excellence in downstream, meteorologist influenced, Met Office output.
  • Become an expert communicator and have the capability to translate complex meteorology into language that is universally understood in order to drive positive action.
  • Through a structured programme of off-roster research and innovation activities, influence teams developing new science, systems and services in order to drive positive change in working practices and output, contributing to improved customer satisfaction.
  • Develop relationships with other Met Office teams in the UK and beyond, and International organisations to promote the reputation of the Met Office as a chosen partner.
  • To commit to continuous improvement of skills and knowledge, role modelling best practice in maintaining CPD to the wider profession.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. ‘We’re experts by nature’ – You can demonstrate a broad and high-level knowledge of both theoretical and applied meteorology, coupled with a strong understanding of synoptic climatology and have the ability to translate this knowledge into actionable advice for a wide-ranging audience.
  2. ‘We’re a force for good’ – Demonstrable understanding of how severe weather impacts on society and infrastructure, both in the UK and globally, alongside an understanding of the Met Office and how we work to mitigate impacts.

  4. ‘We’re better together’ – Strong planning and organisational skills and the ability to be agile within a team, with the ability to apply strategic thinking when balancing operational and non-operational priorities.
  5. ‘We keep evolving’ – Evidence of non-operational activities that have enhanced operational delivery, improved accuracy or customer experience.
Alongside your salary of £49,149, Met Office contributes
£13,270 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

As our Expert Operational Meteorologist, your starting salary will be £49149.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £52,799.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £56,738.00 over time. In addition you will be paid:

  • £4,200.00 per annum Unsocial Hours Allowance for 24/7 shift working.
  • Relocation Assistance may be available.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £67,622.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.
