Job description
As a International Climate Services Foundation Scientist you will contribute to the development, delivery, and evaluation of climate services internationally, supporting partners around the world and strengthening the position of the Met Office as a world leader in the development of climate services. Your duties will include:
- Support stakeholder engagement activities to understand and document customer requirements for climate information.
- Develop new and improved methods of communicating and disseminating climate information.
- Work with internal and external partners, and across different disciplines, to co-produce climate services for different climate hazards and sectoral applications.
- Help build capacity of local stakeholders and scientists through delivery of in-country training and science exchange activities.
- Contribute to a range of international projects e.g., Climate Science for Service Partnership (CSSP) China, the Weather and Climate Science for Service Partnership (WCSSP) South Africa, and the Weather and Climate Information Services (WISER) Africa and Asia Pacific programmes.
The post offers the opportunity for international travel to undertake in-country engagement with a wide range of stakeholders. While not essential in the role, travel overseas is typically for a week or two weeks at a time, with some opportunities for longer periods.
The successful candidate will work in a passionate and experienced team, linking with other teams across the Met Office and partner organisations around the world, to support the development, delivery, and evaluation of climate services. As a member of the Climate Services Development team, within the wider International Applied Science & Services team, they will contribute to a variety of projects and programmes. The candidate will also have opportunities engage in international conferences and climate service activities to build their knowledge, extend professional networks, and advance their careers.
Person specification
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- Evidence of a good understanding of the physical science behind climate variability and climate change, as well as non-climate influences on risk and vulnerability. This could be obtained through experience from a job in a relevant area, or through a relevant physical or social science undergraduate degree (2:1 or higher / equivalent) (Were experts by nature).
- Evidence of an interest in climate services, enthusiasm to engage with different people and communities to understand user needs, and an appreciation for the challenges in developing climate services internationally (Were a force for good).
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using a range of methods (e.g., written reports, presentations) to explain scientific information to different audiences (We live and breathe it).
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team, incorporating different expertise and knowledge to co-produce successful outputs and outcomes (Were better together)
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exploring opportunities for developing new skills and knowledge, and managing time effectively in the design and delivery of research or consultancy projects (We keep evolving).
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- Experience or knowledge in any of the following disciplines:
- Economics
- Science policy
- Statistics
- International development
- Sector-specific expertise (e.g., energy, water, health, agriculture and food security, disaster risk reduction).
Benefits
As our International Climate Services Foundation Scientist, your starting salary will be £25870.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £26954.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £29531.00 over time.
Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £36318.00annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.
