Shaping the future of UK Intelligence
A role as a Non-Executive Director at GCHQ will give you unique insight into the world of national security and a chance to help shape the success and future of the UKs largest intelligence agency.
Were seeking specialists with board-level experience and a passion for making a difference to the lives of people in the UK to join our Board of Directors in several key positions. The time commitment for each of these roles is up to 20 days each year. Job description
As our trusted strategic advisor, youll help set our future direction as we adapt and succeed in a fast-paced world. Youll ensure cultural alignment, embedding our purpose, values and strategy, as well as high levels of accountability, governance and best practice, as we tackle complex modernisation.
Non-Executive Director, Technology and Digital Lead
Bringing recent and extensive experience of technological innovation, youll help us navigate an ever-changing digital landscape and ever-evolving threats. Youll bring independent oversight and counsel to the board, so were primed for advanced services and future-proofing processes at scale.
Non-Executive Director, Audit & Risk Lead
As Chair of GCHQs audit and risk committee (ARAC), youll help the Board and Director fulfil their responsibilities for risk, control and governance. Youll also ensure we operate within the risk appetite and risk management framework agreed, providing the independent view on related matters.

- You must be a British Citizen. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, your application will still be considered
- You must normally have been resident in the UK for 7 out of the last 10 years (this is particularly important if you were born outside the UK
- However, you will be considered if you have (for example) served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majestys Government, studied abroad or lived overseas with your parents
Whats involved in vetting
Successful candidates must undergo Developed Vetting, which is the highest form of security clearance. As part of the vetting process, you will complete a number of vetting forms including a financial questionnaire and youll have a confidential security interview with a trained vetting officer. Developed Vetting clearances are subject to review.
Your discretion is vital
Please limit the number of people you talk to about any of these roles to your immediate family and/or partner. Successful candidates will not normally be able to disclose that they are a Non-Executive Director for GCHQ.
