Job summary
This is a pivotal role in the Goods and Tariffs policy team. We sit at the heart of the UKs trade policy in a team that covers many goods and tariffs policy and operational issues. This specific team is responsible for running the annual business suspensions process, which allows UK businesses to apply for a suspension to a tariff. This policy makes a direct, positive impact to the economy and requires technical know-how, policy acumen and political awareness.
You will be joining a supportive, energetic, and collaborative team. We are committed to learning and development and we will support you to build your trade expertise. There is an important leadership aspect to this role, including oversight for a team of 3-4 people.
You will work closely with HM Treasury who have joint policy ownership of this policy.
Job description
- Delivery of an annual tariff suspensions project with oversight of the planning, policy, legislation and implementation.
- Leading relationships with His Majesty’s Treasury, other government stakeholders, and with business.
- Oversight of other tariff policies linked to suspensions. The exact nature of the role can be shaped to match the experience and skills of the successful candidate.
- Wider leadership on tariff policy, managing a portfolio beyond tariff suspensions and being able to respond and manage new pressures.
- Leadership and management of a team of 3-4 with wider leadership responsibilities as a member of the deputy directorates extended Senior Management Team.
You will be comfortable delivering through others, empowering them to continue delivering high quality policy work and providing robust challenge where needed. You will be an inclusive and supportive leader, nurturing your team to be the best they can be both collectively and individually, and to take pride in their work.
Hybrid Working
The role will be based in either Darlington, Birmingham, Cardiff, Salford, Edinburgh, Belfast or London.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.
If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.

Personal Attributes & Skills
This role would be suitable for someone who enjoys balancing policy and strategy with an eye for technical detail. You will be overseeing a complex policy project that involves working with many different internal and external stakeholders.
Problem solving skills, with an ability to analyse a broad set of often incomplete data, will be key. You will also need to be a strategic thinker, comfortable working with a wider team to develop clear and substantiated recommendations, including where there may be multiple options, that deliver on Ministerial objectives and departmental strategy.
You will be expected to support collaborative and innovative ways of working to ensure we provide an excellent level of service to colleagues and Ministers.
