Group Manager, Cross-Economy Engagement

Salary:          £52,944 – £59,975 pa, with potential for further progression to £67,530 pa with our pay progression scheme.

Location:       Hybrid

Contracted to our Wilmslow, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff or Belfast office, however, through hybrid working we offer flexible home and office-based working opportunities. There will be times when you will be expected to attend the office to collaborate with colleagues or travel due to business need.

Job description

Key responsibilities :

  • Lead, develop and manage delivery of the ICO’s programmes of work to influence and collaborate with key representative bodies and intermediaries in the UK digital economy and wider private sector.
  • Proactively identify, plan and deliver strategic engagement opportunities and interventions, including industry workshops, meetings, and public speaking engagements.
  • Lead the ICO’s input to external consultations and debate covering developments within the digital economy and wider private sector that interact with the ICO’s remit.
  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders and act as a key point of contact to plan, agree, schedule and deliver policy development, engagement, communications and other activities.
  • Provide strategic advice and support to the Commissioner and his Executive Team, including the delivering of timely and high quality written briefings.
  • Take ownership of deliverables produced by the team for internal and external stakeholder work, in particular ensuring the quality of meeting documentation and written outputs.
  • Monitor and demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of your team, in particular through the use of upward reporting to senior colleagues and communication of your team’s work across the ICO and, where appropriate, to external audiences.
  • Manage and lead department projects and initiatives as required, ensuring they meet strategic objectives and implementation is achieved on time and within budget.
  • Contribute to meeting the objectives of the ICO25 plan and business plan for the Technology, Innovation and Enterprise directorate.
  • Deputise for the Head of Enterprise as necessary.

Person specification

About you

  • Substantial experience relevant to the role requirements, as described in the role responsibilities and person specification, and accumulated through any combination of academic or vocational qualifications or experience. 
  • Substantial relevant experience, which could have been gained from a policy, regulatory, operational, or corporate environment.
  • Experience of managing people and leading teams and / or complex projects, including the ability to develop and deliver against performance targets, and develop and manage staff performance.
  • Experience of interpreting complex information which could include legislation or operational rules and procedures. Experience of applying data protection or associated legislation will be an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills and an ability to represent the ICO with external stakeholders at a senior level, including during bilateral and multilateral engagement.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to analyse complex information (including legislation) and to formulate clear and persuasive arguments for a range of audiences.
  • ·        Strong leadership and strategic thinking skills, able to lead projects and programmes of work to achieve organisational goals and build stakeholder communities to develop broad understanding.
  • Strong influencing skills, able to secure positive outcomes through negotiations with external and internal stakeholders at the most senior levels.
  • A strong understanding of the wider parliamentary, democratic, political and regulatory framework in the UK and overseas, and its connection to the digital economy and associated privacy issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to travel to meetings and events in the UK and overseas (possibly outside office hours)
