DESNZ
The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:
- Delivering security of energy supply
- Ensuring properly functioning energy markets
- Encouraging greater energy efficiency
- Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries
For 2023, our priorities are:
- Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longer-term bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
- Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
- Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
- Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for long-term reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
- Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.
- Pass the Energy Bill to support the emerging CCUS and hydrogen sectors; to update the governance of the energy system; and to reduce the time taken to consent offshore wind.

Do you want to help to achieve the Government’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050?
We are looking for a committed, articulate and highly skilled individual to support the decarbonisation of our energy system. Our homes, vehicles and heating are increasingly powered by renewable energy, dramatically cutting our reliance on fossil fuels. Access, analysis and use of quality data will be crucial to transitioning to a smart and flexible energy system.
Digital energy infrastructure will be as important as the physical cables that deliver our energy today.
Our dedicated team is responsible for the Governments energy digitalisation policy. We deliver the actions in the Energy Digitalisation Strategy and our response to the Energy Digitalisation Taskforce.
We are recruiting for a Senior Policy Advisor to lead our policy approach for delivering the digital energy infrastructure that is critical to the UKs zero carbon future.
Person specification
You will develop our policy approach to digital energy infrastructure, the digital processes, capabilities, and partnerships crucial to delivering a secure, decarbonised energy system. You will develop approaches to tackle complex policy challenges around governance, security, privacy and innovation.
Your responsibilities will include:
Developing the key criteria and the necessary analysis to determine appropriate approaches for digital energy infrastructure
Presenting and justifying recommendations to senior officials and Ministers
Becoming an expert in energy data and digitalisation policy, starting with our flagship area of improving visibility of energy system assets
Working closely with Ofgem to establish responsibilities for digital energy infrastructure, considering the regulator, the government and the roles of other organisations
Integrating foundational security and data privacy requirements into digitalisation policy
Managing relationships with a range of expert industry stakeholders, including those working on priority programs
Monitoring the international digital and energy policy landscape for opportunities to further the Governments objectives
You will have a system-wide view of energy policy and digitalisation, and will work closely with a range of policy experts (within DESNZ and across other Government departments). This will include working in areas such as smart metering, smart appliances, energy market reform, flexibility, and consumer protection.
Skills and Experience
