The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Job description

Are you a Planning and Scheduling professional with the desire to work on sophisticated, perennial and high-volume defence programmes? If so, the SDA have an incredible opportunity for you to lead our Schedule Management Group (SMG) at HMNB Devonport, Plymouth.

As Planning and Scheduling Lead, you will lead a multi-disciplinary team responsible for delivering valuable projects and services to scope, on budget, on time and aligned with organisational vision. You will drive consistency and standardisation across your directorate, implementing strategic direction and providing expert guidance on complex issues across a range of contexts.

As Lead, you will deliver technical training, coach personnel and help to support the build and sustainment of SMG’s capabilities. Due to the nature of this work, leadership and working with stakeholders is critical to success. Therefore, you will be required to uphold strong relationships and provide subject matter expertise to SDA teams, our contractors and the wider nuclear enterprise.

In the SDA, continuous professional development is actively encouraged. You will have access to defined upskilling policies, APM qualifications, routes to ChPP and support to prosper. The SDA operate a hybrid working environment with an expectation to attend site a minimum of 2 days per week, according to business need/team. Initially, you will be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with your team, role and the environment. When attending site, your primary place of work will be HMNB Devonport, Plymouth, Devon PL2 2BG. Described as the “Ocean’s Gate”, Devonport is the largest naval base in Western Europe offering tangible exposure to our projects and an excellent work/life balance.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the planning and scheduling discipline in a Project and Programme environment, driving maturity, consistency, and standardisation across the directorate you are responsible for.
  • Responsible for the implementation of strategic direction driven by senior management across the SDA directorates.
  • Provision of expert scheduling advice and guidance on complex / novel scheduling issues.
  • Engaging with the Project Delivery function and wider team to understand and establish the demand for P&S activity.
  • Support the build and sustainment of the SMG capability including delivery of technical training and guiding / coaching of suitably qualified and experienced people.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Experience leading planners & schedulers in a complex Project/Programme environment, with a proven track record of implementing Planning & Scheduling methodologies, with experience of shaping and/or influencing policy and strategy
  • Experience of leading Project Change and the impact of change on the schedule and planning artefacts.
  • Experience with Oracle Primavera P6 Planning software or other leading planning software.
