Job description

The Roads and Projects Infrastructure Delivery (RAPID) Client Directorate oversees delivery, by National Highways, of multi-million-pound road improvement projects set out in the 5-year second Road Investment Strategy (RIS2 and preparing for the future strategy (RIS3). 

As part of the RAPID Client Team, you will be leading the Department’s sponsorship of some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the country or overseeing the delivery of the Roads Investment Strategy (RIS2) portfolio and working with partners to assess performance of the portfolio, or support unlocking of delivery by addressing portfolio challenges. 

You and your team will help achieve the Department’s requirements as client and sponsor for one or more strategic roads projects (major projects above National Highways’ delegated authority). You will ensure appropriate governance and assurance, working closely with colleagues in National Highways, HMT, the Infrastructure & Projects Authority and across DfT. You will work with National Highways to understand any project opportunities or challenges and work with wider partners to help unblock any challenges and sponsor these through to key milestones.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead for the Department on the sponsorship and clienting of one or more large-scale complex Tier 1 road improvement projects.
  • Ensure effective communication with key project stakeholders and senior Sponsors in National Highways, alongside developing a network of contacts in the department with specialist knowledge in strategy, economics, finance, commercial, shareholding, project management, strategic communications and local highways.
  • Ensure that the department provides a robust level of scrutiny and challenge of project delivery in a supportive way. 
  • Ensure that appropriate governance is in place, in line with departmental guidance and the project maintains its business focus.
  • Ensure that the department sets out its requirements clearly and that project aims continue to be aligned with the departments business priorities.

About you

To thrive in this role, you will

  • Possess Experience of working on Project Delivery.
  • Have experience of leading a team in a complex delivery environment.
  • Be able to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Be a resilient individual who can work effectively to keep a team motivated when problems arise to maintain work flow.
  • Have excellent communication skills through both written and verbal communication.

Additional Information 

A minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.  

Occasional travel to other DfT offices will be required.
