Job summary
Cefas are seeking a numerical scientist to contribute towards understanding and quantifying interdependencies between the core challenges of biodiversity loss, climate change and food provisioning. This role will involve cross-cutting quantitative research across all four of Cefas science themes (Ecosystem Change, Food from Water, Healthy Seafood, Environment and People) to quantify the causes and consequences of biodiversity change, with internal and external collaboration across diverse disciplines. The applied science will be both hypothesis-driven and solution-orientated, and require advanced programming skills, the ability to handle big-data, develop and apply novel statistical techniques.
Cefas biodiversity science draws together scientists from across disciplines, bridging expertise in quantitative ecology, ecosystems, environmental change, biology, mathematics, socio-economics, and natural capital. Through quantifying the capacity of the oceans to support human needs, Cefas provide UK and overseas governments with impartial science, evidence, and advice to support decisions on how to deliver against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and ambitions such as those set out in the UK Marine Strategy and Defras 25 Year Environment Plan.
Encouraging diverse applicants
We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market and in their career progression. You will help to develop and apply novel and emerging analytical techniques to further understanding of, for example, species distributions (e.g., those commercially exploited, or of conservation concern), food web structure and dynamics, environmental change and anthropogenic impacts on the distribution of species and biodiversity, and the consequences of changes in management measures.
You will exploit existing Cefas and other datasets and literature to synthesise information, and disseminate findings through high-impact outputs, such as peer-reviewed publications and policy briefs.
You will interact with Cefas scientists from a wide range of scientific disciplines.
Over time, we expect you to develop externally funded autonomous and collaborative research in related areas of macroecology, community ecology, theoretical ecology and ecoinformatics.
Person specification
Applicants from a variety of backgrounds including ecology, mathematics, statistics, physics and computer science are encouraged to apply.
We expect effective communication skills with the ability to present findings, IT literacy including data analysis, good team working and problem-solving skills, and the ability to plan workload and programmes.
The following are other essential criteria required for this role and you must be able to demonstrate your skills and experience in the following areas:
