Job summary

RBG Kew is seeking a Coordinator for our involvement in the Darwin Tree of Life project to join our Science team.  As new approaches to DNA sequencing are increasingly transforming the biological sciences, Kew is involved in this exciting project, which aims to decipher the complete genome of every eukaryotic species in the UK.  The post-holder will coordinate Kew’s involvement over several interested teams and our collaboration with our external partners.

Job description

Kew’s involvement in the Darwin Tree of Life (DToL) project encompasses both plants and fungi; and includes sampling and vouchering of specimens; determination of genome sizes, and involvement in the project’s ethical, regulatory and outreach activity. Kew is the lead in delivering the fungal component of DToL. The post holder will coordinate our involvement in the project, managing operations, supporting the senior investigators at Kew, and liaising with external project partners. The post holder will engage with the fungal element and secure its successful delivery. To do this, they will engage in extensive dialogue with project stakeholders, within and outside of Kew; and develop broad collaborations to open future opportunities for scientific partnerships.

Person specification

The successful candidate will have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. mycology, botany, biodiversity science, bioinformatics, genomics), and will be excited about the potential of genomics to transform scientific research. They will have previous experience of working in a research environment. They will be good communicators, happy to engage with a wide community of researchers, and with a proven ability to implement and deliver projects and to contribute to the scientific literature. Experience of fieldwork, fungal taxonomy, citizen science, molecular biology, or computational analysis would be an advantage.
