The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of progressive Industrial Placements, which will commence from July 2024 until July 2025.

What we are offering

We’re looking for an exceptional Ensemble Climate Projection – Industrial Placement 2024 to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Ensemble Climate Projection – Industrial Placement 2024 you will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and will be on site at Exeter HQ one day a week but at a minimum, once a month. Ensemble Climate Projection is a small team who largely work on site at HQ, with the core day being Thursday but the agreed day on site can be flexible.

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2025, there is potential for it to develop into an opportunity to join our Graduate Development scheme once you complete your University studies.

Job description

Job Purpose:

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is an overall poleward ocean current system in the Atlantic Ocean and is important for the global climate through its role in the transport and uptake of heat and carbon. The AMOC has drawn wide public attention because it is expected to slow down under global warming, which could have significant impact on European climate. Your key responsibility will be to analyse a large dataset of climate simulations under the historical and future climate scenarios to identify key drivers of the AMOC slowdown in the climate model. This understanding will feed into our national climate projections. The post will be suitable for someone who has keen interest in current environmental issues and strong desire to improve the situation through advancing science that ultimately guides governmental policy and decision-making.

As our Ensemble Climate Projection – Industrial Placement 2024, your key responsibilities are:

  • Using simple statistical/machine learning techniques in python code to identify physical drivers of the AMOC slowdown in the climate model under global warming.
  • Quantitatively estimate the relative impact of the drivers and identify the determining factor of the start and the rate of the AMOC slowdown.
  • Present your work in a Met Office internal seminar and group meetings. Summarise and document your results in scientific reports or papers where appropriate.
  • Proactively and flexibly come up with and try out different ways when things don’t turn out as planned. Form and modify a working hypothesis as necessary.
  • Engage with scientists within and outside the team to discuss ideas that help carry out the project.

Person specification

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. (Expert by nature) Studying for a degree in earth science, physical or mathematical sciences which includes an industrial placement year.
  2. (Expert by nature) Evidence in good coding skills in python, or in other programming languages and ability to learn and apply python.
  3. (Live and breathe it) Evidence in strategically planning tasks in a workplan for seeing a project through to completion.
  4. (Better together) Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience in presenting and writing scientific reports.
  5. (Force for good) Evidence of enthusiasm in current environmental issues and motivation to improve the situation through advancing science.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
