Job summary

This is an exciting and challenging role. It operates at the intersection of domestic and international policy, and addresses economic and wider security concerns. The post holder will need to work across Whitehall to develop a coherent, integrated approach to ensuring the long-term prosperity of the UK. They will also need to build an extensive network of relationships with our major international partners. The role also has a significant operational part, through responsibility for our exports control systems and implementation of our trade sanctions. This is a demanding role with the opportunity to shape our approach to some of the most complicated challenges facing our country.

Job description

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with the Chief Negotiator for the UK and Second Permanent Secretary, you will lead a group of circa 530 staff, and hold responsibility for the following functions:

  • Global Trade – working with partners through G7 and G20 and in the WTO to deliver the UK’s strategic trade priorities and defend rules-based trade. Preparing for and managing trade disputes that might arise.
  • Trade Defence – ensuring the UK has an architecture to defend against unfair trade – including through working with (and sponsoring) the Trade Remedies Authority, and also dealing with market distorting practices and economic coercion.
  • Trade Sanctions – responding to global challenges and emerging threats through the design, delivery and implementation of targeted trade sanctions, strengthening UK and global security, including via the Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation.
  • Export Control Joint Unit – working with the MoD and FCDO to license and regulate military and other sensitive exports.
  • Global Supply Chains – working across Whitehall and with colleagues in our overseas network to strengthen critical supply chains.
  • Bilateral trade policy relations – implementing our full range of trade agreements with partners  and delivering an ambitious programme to remove market access barriers for British companies. 
  • Tariffs – ensuring the UK global tariff works for the UK.

As a member of the Executive Committee, you will work closely with colleagues in the UK and overseas to ensure a joined-up approach to delivering Ministers’ priorities.

Alongside your salary of £125,000, Department for Business and Trade contributes
